Subject: front differential oil leak IP: Logged
Message: hello,
I have a 99 V6 dakota with 5 speed (4wd). The front seal for the differential has been leaking for awhile and I need to replace it. Its the seal for the drive line. Has anyone had the same problem and have any tips to offer in replacing it? It doesn't look to tough but just checking if anyone has done this before.

Message: todd, its the same as the rear axle. I'm not sure if they use a crush sleave or not on the 99, on my 88 it doesn't have a crush sleave.
When you say the "drive line" I assume you mean where the drive shaft from the transfer case goes to the drive axle.
If you have a manual go by what it says, if not, make sure you mark every thing the yoke, U joints, the bolt that holds the yoke on and the pinion shaft as well so everything will go back together as it came apart. Before you you remove the yoke, you will need to use an INCH POUND torque wrench and see how much torque it takes to turn the bolt/yoke. write the number down, then remove the bolt, washer, yoke, then the seal. Replace in the order of removel. and torque to spec. The spec for my 88 is 96Inch Pounds. after you torque the bolt, recheck the torque it takes to turn the bolt/yoke and it should be pretty close to the same as when you checked before you removed it. although most likely it will be a little tighter, that's common.
Good Luck
