Subject: 1987 Dodge Dakota Auto to manual swap? IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering---I have a 1987 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9 liter engine. It's got a transfer case, but it's an automatic, and I'd like it to be a manual. Does anyone know if it's possible to swap the automatic out for a manual, or where I could find out if it's possible? I know the models for that year came with a 5-speed manual, but I have zero ideas on how to find out if 1) My engine will mate up to the 5 speed manual that came with the other models, and 2) if said tranny will mate to the transfer case.

Message: You can do the swap no problem, for the 87 Daks you will need a A535 tranny, which I actually have one that has been rebuilt. I did a premanmun to magnum conversion, and my A535 tranny wouldn't work because the flywheel doesn't have the teeth in it for a crank position sensor, also it is a few inches smaller in diameter. If you need a tranny I have a completely rebuilt one along with the bellhousing sitting in my shed collecting dust. I'm not sure where you live, but I'm willing to help yah out if you need it.

Message: Changing over to a manual from an auto can be done, but it is a little work, if you know how to work on cars it shouldn't be too much of a job. If its your first try at doing something like this I would suggest you have someone help you who has, or knows how to do such things. Nothing ever goes together the way its supposed to, and having some knowledge on how to over come trouble areas sure helps. Another thing the auto is a little longer than the manual, so you may have to replace the front drive axle in order for the front axle to work. As far as the transfer case, it should bolt on to a 4X4 tranmission manual or auto, it should be the same. Where you may have a problem is going from an 87 trans to a newer trans. I just don't know if the bolt pattern for the NP 207 is the same as the NP 231.
Hope this helps
Good Luck
