Subject: Which tranny ? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 92 4x4 and the book says I may have a AX15 or something else which I can't remember the name of, how do I tell which it is.
The fill plug is on the driver side and the drain appears to be on the passenger side, if that helps
Thanks

Message: Mozzer, there should be a tag on the drivers side of the trans, that will tell you just what you do have. I think the other trans they used is the NP/NV A535, they used it at first then in 92 or 93 they went to the AX15. They also had a
2500 it was a little better than the A535, but the 3500 is even better. I know that's a little more info than you probably needed. I have the A535 and my drain plug is at the very bottom at the rear of the trans.
Good Luck

Message: Thanks for the info, I couldn't find a tag anywhere so I was hoping for some other distguishing marks or features.
The main reason for asking is to know what oil to use, 10w30 or gear oil.

Message: mozzer, if you have the owners manual I would check that, other wise I would use the 10W30 oil and not the gear oil, about the only thing that uses gear oil any more is the drive axles, even the big trucks use a synthetic light weight gear oil. The NP A535 says to use the 10W30 my repair manual says for all manual transmissions to use the 10W30 the Manual covers 1987-1996 models.
Hope that helps.

Message: Great, thanks for that, the only manual I have is the Haynes thing, which mentions both boxes & types of oil.
If the engine oil will work in both then that's good enough for me. That's a big difference in viscosities from 10w30 to 70w90.

Message: mozzer, not only is the 70W90 thicker, but you will get worst fuel mileage, and harder shifting as well. Just a tip, if I were you I would use a synthatic 10W30 that helps the shifting too. I use a syn.ATF in mine, and I am happy with the way it shifts.
Good Luck
