Subject: will not crank IP: Logged
Message: I've got a wierd problem with my dak. It's a 96 dak with an engine from a 98 dak. (v-6) It started stalling quite often and was getting harder and harder to crank until one day it wouldn't crank. So a mechanic replaced my computer. Ran 6-days and died again. Mechanic replaced the fuel pump. Ran 3-days and died again. Now the mechanic thinks it's a short somewhere. My question is.......Does this computer need to be programmed? My mechanic says NO, but I'm thinking this may be my problem. Also, my lo-beam lights will come on for about 10-seconds and go off. Hi-beams stay on as long as I need them. This may be the short my mechanic is talking about.??? Cause I've replaced the light switch and it didn't help.
Thanks for any ideas, suggestions, help.

Message: Under the hood inner drivers side fender well you have a black fuse and relay box. Take the box off and un-tape the wire harness behind it. What you are looking for is a splice of 3 or 4 wires. The wires are usually red & white. The splice either gets crudded up or breaks all together.

Message: Thanks, but I've done the splice. Well I unwrapped it and it looked fine so I taped it back up and left it.

Message: Anyone else have any suggestions, ideas? Do the computers bought from parts houses need to be programmed by the dealer? I've heard they do, but mine has not been.
thanks, daveo.

Message: the only problem i've seen mnetioned whne changing a pcm is that sometimes the CEL will light up but having the dealer flash the correct VIN number into the PCM took care of that.
what codes are you getting?

Message: I'm not getting any codes, that's the weird thing. Just will not crank. No fire or fuel. Like something is disabling the computer.
I'm at a loss and already have about $1000.00 in it troubleshooting. I can't do much more. May have to just sell it as is! I only paid $3000.00 for truck a few years ago.
Thanks for all the help you guys!

Message: As for the low beam lights, it could be the dimmer switch, that could cause the light problem, but I can't see where it would affect the no fuel/spark problem, but stranger things have happened, it could be a bad ground some where around the computer/engine. That could also cause the head light problem. Start at the battery, and check all the grounds, if not sure remove clean and replace. Check for ground wires between the engine and frame, and body.
Good Luck

Message: ok. I did the splice today. Steved, I DO NOT have a check engine light when key is turned on. Not sure what else to do now. I checked the ASD. I swapped it with another one, but no luck.
Any other ideas, suggestions?
Thanks to all.

Message: OBIO3, yes it just turns over and over. Like it's not getting fire or fuel. Like Steved said, I don't think the computer is even coming on. It's almost like something has shorted or shut the computer down.
I'm at a loss. I've Never had a vehicle that I couldn't fix. I SURE HATE to take it to the dealer. :(
Thanks everyone!

Message: Ah, that is completely different from a motor that won't crank ! You should be able to tell if it's getting fuel or not by pulling a plug after cranking. Some have reported problems with cam or crank sensors that didn't set a code; that could be a couple of things that would cause what you are now describing.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Dave are you hearing the fuel pump prime itself when you turn the key on?
Do a run down on what we all know as the ABC's.
Air,Fuel & Spark
We can be sure the engine is getting air. Check for fuel as Kowalski said. Have an old spark plug?
Pull a wire off put it on the old plug and lay that plug on the motor some where to ground it. Have someone crank the motor.

Message: I know this one is old, but I still can't get my truck to start, just turns over and over. There is NO check engine light when key is turned on. I replaced the Ignition starter switch on the column with NO luck. It has a New computer and New fuel pump.
Any other suggestions?? I'll try one or two more things, then it's gonna be sold AS IS!
Thanks to all,
Daveo.
