Message: Has anyone ever had problems with gauges not functioning? I changed my fuel filter/regulator assembly about 18mo ago and after that my gauge started acting goofy. At first it would bounce back and forth around a half tank then it would only register at a full tank now it has quit all together. I am new here and would be thankful fro any help.

Message: Ahhhhh Yesssss, the good ole gas gauge.......
Mine doesn't work either and from what I gather it's fairly "normal". I just use my trip odometer and fill it around 300 miles.
Probably not what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

Message: I know this is gonna sound like SH** but I know the sending unit has been the culprit on most of these.. But.. I pulled the battery and let the computer reset, and its been fine so-far.. lets see if any one else tries it if it seems to work in some cases.

Message: hey i have a 93 dodge dakota se and my gas gauge does not work at all either. we brought it in and they said they will have to most likely replace the cinding unit in the gas tank. The cinding unit looks like a little bobber. They said it will be under $100 to replace so im gonna have them do it. Also, do any of u guys have trouble with ur paint on ur dakota cuz mine is pealing off (blue, silver trim). Any input will sure be appreciated. Thanx :)

Message: Not probs w/Gas gauge yet, YET! Josh yer dern Lucky! mine made it to 217,000 then KABLOOEY! 3 rods out the bottom of the Oil Pan!
I was wondering why there were several large primer sections on the truck when I bought it. Hood & Roof mostly. the deep green paint peeled off but the primer stayed bonded.
Chebby's had the same problem when they tried to "Rust Proof" thier body panels by Galvenizing them before painting. Only problem was the paint didn't bond for $H1T!
As far as the fuel gauge not working or bouncing. My guess would be the sending unit is stuck, You have a bad connection or it's not grounded properly. Touching the side of the tank shouldn't be a problem, all the one's I've worked on have Poly Tanks.
Try resetting the 'puter. Remove a battery terminal, turn key to the "On" position and let it set about 5 min. turn key off, re-connect battery terminal, turn key on for a couple seconds before starting. Only problem with this is you have to reset your clock and program your radio stations again. Uggghhh... If it's not 1 thing it's anuther ;).
Laterz,
Shank

Message: hey I replaced the fuel sending unit and mine started to work again.... Then about 4 hours later I went around a tight corner and it quite working. The problem is that the sending unit is positioned on a slide where two 1/8 inch metal screws hold it in place in this plastic tube and those screws come loose since the slosh in the tank wiggles that sending unit back and fourth. This means that the sending unit drops down to the bottom or into a new location making the calibration of the fuel gauge incorrect and or not work.

Message: hey josh i have 125,115 miles on my 3.9L V6 dakota and on the hood my paint is really pealing away. There are also some spots on the silver trim that are starting to peal also. I think im gonna sand the whole truck down and repaint it. Also have u had any trouble with ur timing chain in ur dakota? People say that after a while the timing chain goes junk after a lot of high miles have been put on and the engine has a rattling sound like mine has. I would think urs would sound that away cuz u have over 200k on urs?

Message: i had to replace my timing chain, i had around 105,000 on it when i did it. it made a tremendous difference in power. those chains had a recall on them. but mine happened to have around an inch and a half of play. my truck runs alot smoother and has more power, you may want to check into it. i put a double roller chain and gears in it. never stretch again..hehe

Message: I just got back from a 'trusted' mechanic business with my 94 Dakota. My back breaklines had to be replaced, but they said that the RATTLE that I picked up last summer is the cataliytic converter desintagrating and that I also need a new muffler system, and the cover on the timing chain is leaking oil. What has my neck hairs in a frazzle is that NOTHING was ever wrong with my gas gauge. I came home to the gauge bouncing to the song on the radio...just about. On a full tank it bounced from half to empty. Of course the business is willing to drop the gas tank now. I plan on taking it to the local dealership to check the ground and if anything around it 'had been played with', also if I can get the exhaust system for less than another $400.

Message: I replaced the sending unit in 1998 or so and just replaced the pump this year on my 95.
I have spare sending unit from a 95 with 22 gallon tank if anyone wants to buy it. Spent about $76 on it at dealer, will see for $35 plus shipping. I thought my sending unit was bad, bought new one, turned out to be pump bad.
