Subject: difference between magnum & non magnum IP: Logged
Message: hi, i just bought a 1994 dakota sport 2wd, it had a 3.9L magnum but the guy i bought it from pulled it and was going to have it rebuilt but lost interest and sold it to me dirt cheap. he also gave me an 88-89 3.9L that is not a magnum but it's complete and ready to drop in. my question is will the non magnum be easy to make work or will it not work at all since it doesn't have the magnum parts? i'm new to dodges and i don't know what all will work with other parts and what won't. thanks

Message: Mike-s, did he give you the Magnum engine as well? If so you can use the heads, and intake on the non-Mag eng. and it will use all the mag eng. sensors ect. You will have to use the mag head bolts and everything should work just fine, the 88 didn't have nearly as much power as the Mag though. The pre-mag was rated at 120hp @4400rpm and 195lbs ft. torque @ 2200rpm. I think the mag is rated 175HP and 225 torque. Sorry I don't know at what RPM.
I don't know if the motor mounts are the same or not, I think they are, but I could be wrong.
Also, you would need a computer for the 88 if you can't put the Mag. engine parts on it.
Good Luck

Message: yea i have some of the mag engine, the guy told me that it spun a bearing thats why he pulled it. but some of the parts are missing like the distributor, water pump, and some others i can't think of right now. would those parts from the non mag work on the mag? i thought about getting the crank machined and the block looked at and maybe just rebuild it.

Message: Hi mike If it was me I would go with the mag engine. The older ones are not only under powered but they dont get the MPGs the Mag motors get as well. If your on a tight budget then use what you have. Happy Holidays

Message: I think the dist. will fit, and the water pump isn't a big deal either just get a new one and put it on they usually don't ask for the old ones any more for a core. Curly is right the mag engine is a better engine than the old style if its just the spun bearing you should have the crank reground and the rods resized, but it can get expensive, so do what you need to to get it going.
Good Luck
