 Subject: HELP 4 WHEEL DRIVE poping out

Im gonna get straight to the point, i will throw my truck into 4 wheel drive, drive it a little bit usually on decel and all of a sudden it pops out and makes a bunch of grinding noises and (the 4 wheel drive arm) is in the same spot not moving. That is what i thought it was at first but nothing to do with that. Then you pop it out, of 4 wheel drive and throw it back in and its fine....
Could there be something simple?
or is the transfer case basically kickin the bucket
also transfer case does that shair tranny fluid with the transmission or is that seperate.
HOpe someone can help
also its a 87 v6 dakota

HOw hard is it to take out a transfer case?

Your linkage needs to be soaked and I mean soaked
with real oil the shifters get sticky do not
inguage all the way and POP OUT LOL
The 231 is a stong case and holds up well I have
only replaced 1 in a jeep in all these years
but I have seen the shifter problem hundreds of
times
WD40 will not cut it here soak it from top remove
boot and SOAK IT WITH OIL

The trans oil and transfer case oil are different, they don't share the same oil. there is a seal in both the transmission, (rear) And transfer case. (front and rear)

So your saying that even if the linkage seems like it moves properly and does seem like it moves its just a very good chance that something is getting hung up?
I looked under the truck while someone else was moving the linkage and everything seemed like it was moving correctly. Might i add its not like it moves out of place but ill try and give that a shot. Wow would i be happy if its just that.

The 231 case uses trans fluid but no the trans and
case do not share fluid
back of case 2 plugs 1 3/16 on most or 30 mil
top fill level bottom drain
yes the lever will seam to move fine but not
fully inguage the case if not inguaged all the
way they will pop out
did you by any chance hit a stick and wack the
linkage just pop it off and push lever all the
way and see if its moving enough to fully inguage
