Subject: Dist. bushing ? Larry ? IP: Logged
Message: Hi
I went in a few days ago to check the fuel inj. syn. remembering I didn't check it after installing new chain and ten.
OK so anyway after backing the hold down bolt off a bit while turning the dist. shaft I notice the rotor is moving also while I turn the dist shaft. It doesn't seem right to me, is it OK or is this a bushing issue?

Message: I would check the bushing. The rotor should not turn when rotating the dist. housing, unless you have lifted the dist enough to disengage the shaft from the bushing. It could also be the end of the dist. shaft as well.

Message: I got to disagree here, Don't recall ever seeing a dist shaft that didn't have a little gear slack in it. On the other hand, if your talking side to side play, fix it. Just buy new bushings. You can check this play with a dial indicator. Look the allowed play up in the book and you have a usable answer.

Message: Nope, No side to side play.
But that rotor does move a good 1/4 maybe 1/2 inch when I turn the dist shaft. I've had an odd miss that comes in right around 1800 maybe 1900 and seems to lessen or go away after 2100 - 2200.
I'm wondering if this is the problem?

Message: If the dist. doesn't have any side ways play, I'ld say its ok, I have seen a little play as far as trying to turn, but I have never seen more than just a little. Not even a 1/4 inch. I'm thinking either the end of the dist. shaft is wore out, or the drive gear that drives the dist, and the oil pump must be wore out, I have to admit, I have never seen that happen either.
That could explain why you were having some rough running/missing problems.
Good Luck
