Subject: BIG PROBLEM! HELP IP: Logged
Message: have a Dodge dakota 2wd 3.9 v6 1994 Auto.
I was driving down the road the other day and the motor just completly shut off on me.
So i took my old battery in and it test 10.1 amps not 12 amps. So i got a new battery
put it in and it didnt start. So i checked the fuses under the hood. The ignition switch
was shot 40 amp green. It fired right up. But now for some reason my horn is dead . The
tach is stuck the abs light and brake light is on. And the big kicker i have no brake lights
or head lights. No radio. But all my other gauges work and signals/flashers. But sometimes i can start it and the tach will work. But when i pull the headlight switch or hit the brake pedal it will automatically stop the tach gauge to where ever its at.

Message: Check your ground sources you probably have a loose ground, which would explain as you try to use something it shuts others off its called a floating ground. get your self a manual and check the wiring charts, find all the devices having problems and locate their grounds on the diagram it should say where they are located physically on the truck as well. even if they look alright just unscrew them clean stuff up with a wire brush and then tightly screw them back in, it can be tricky to track down and have a lot of weird symptomsbut if the switches are good and the fuses are good its probably a grounding issue, also tach and horn run on the same power circuit. since you blew the ignition fuse there most likely is a short or ground problem which is causing the other failures its gonna be a pain to find but it should give you a start where to look

any replies or possibilites would be a help. is there a possibility that in behind my cluster is not getting good connections??? but ill look some more on my grounds

Message: Did you check for short circuits? It really sounds like a ground problem the ground for some of the lights should be on the fenders, like I said assuming your fuses are all 100% its a short or loose ground somewhere on the truck this is not exclusive to the engine compartment, a good thing to look at first is why did that 40 amp fuse blow? they don't blow unless there is a problem with the wiring trace it down to what caused that to blow and I bet you'll find the problem. a loose ground would cause a device to intermittently turn on where as a short would pop fuses or melt wires. gotta go over the systems that aren't working with a fine tooth comb a wire diagram will help a lot. I doubt the cluster is having a poor connection as only the tach isn't working. the abs lights on can be caused by a fault with the ABS system caused by a short or loose ground somewhere. but the connectors on back should clip in securely but it would still be a good place to look. my fuel pump relay ground came loose on me once and i had to tear the whole truck apart trying to trace the problem down. and i also had a lot of issues with my tach and my headlights/ turn signals which was all caused by one tiny ground on the washer fluid reservoir. they can be hidden quite well so really look closely a lot of devices share a common ground.

Message: find or make a clean spot somewhere under the hood
needs to be on the body
i would remove a fender bolt sand the spot under it clean
a piece or wire under the bolt get it back down tight
clamp the other end of wire to the neg side of the battery
if your problem still persists then i doubt its a ground issue

Message: Thats not necessarily true, this does insure that the body is hooked up properly as a ground to the battery, but does not solve the problem if a device ground is corroded or broken where it attaches to the body there are several grounding points all over the truck any of which could be the problem. best way to go is wire diagram and follow the ground for the devices not working and it will tell you where the devise ground is physically located on the vehicle. though running an alternative battery to body ground wire is a good check but it and of it self does not remove a bad ground as the problem as its most likely a device ground than a battery grounding problem
