Subject: power steering additive IP: Logged
Message: been having some problems with my rack and pinion on my truck. it's not quite bad enough to replace yet and not leaking. at the suggestion of the shop that aligned it they recommended Lucas power steering additive. I emptied the pump reservoir like the directions said and replaced the fluid with the additive. This stuff is thick!!! It has helped the rack but with the cold weather everytime i start the truck i get real loud noise from the pump for a second or two and the steering is stiff. didn't do this before the additive. I'm thinking maybe cause it's so thick in viscosity. Can't help but wonder though if it's hurting my gas mileage. i've seen a drop in MPG since adding it. I guess it would almost be like having the ac on, it's extra load on the engine. I think i'm going to gradually suck it back out and replace with steering fluid to thin it out again, i hate this noise! let me know what you guys think.

Message: Yes , thin it out a bit.
It is more the cold weather tho that causing mpg drop.

Message: I agree with ? I think its just the cold that is making you lose some gas mileage. I think maybe you should have only added a little of the lucas, not all. Get it warmed up then drain about 1/2-3/4 then refil with power steering fluid. That may help with the problem you were having and make it easier to steer when cold.
Good Luck

Message: this morning i sucked out what i could get from the reservoir. i did it before i even started the truck so it was cold. the turkey baster could barely suck it up! i had to do a little coaxing with the bulb on the baster to extract it. I topped back up with steering fluid to proper level.
the lucas says when steering fluid is low top off with lucas until leak stops usually one or two bottles till leak stops. then it says to control squeals and hard spots (my rack) to drain reservoir and refill with lucas, usually one bottle. I think maybe they need to revise this because one bottle is way to thick!

Message: The power stearing pumps on all vehicles is the
most forgoten of them all people never change the
fluid
Go to mrmoly.com and get a tube of auto trans
additive
put 3 or 4 ozs in the pump after you get all the
fluid out you can and top off with amsoil universal trans fluid
this will not only stop the whining but also
interaly lube the rack
just put the rest of the tube in your trans or
save it for other uses
I have done this to hundreds of pumps and all
were cured unless there is a tore up bearing if
you can wiggle the shaft its bad than replace it
