I finally broke down and brought my 98 Dakota (3.9 V6, 2WD) to a shop to have them diagnose my emissions/driveability problems (popping, misfiring and backfiring hen at temp). I had repalced every sensor to no avail. I was told that the first item they found was incorrect fuel pressure- it was up to 80PSI when running but dropped to 0 as soon as it was shut off. That explained the hard starting, anyway- I guess factiory specs are 49PSI running and it should hold 35PSI for several minutes after shutdown. He then quoted me an exorbitant price ~$500 for a "pump package"- he said he only used Mopar parts and it cam as an wassembly with filter, regulator etc... Does that sound correct? I see pumps online for a lot less- can the individual components be purchased and how easy is it to replace a pump etc? I am at my wits end and am ready to sell at a loss!

that price sounds about right for Mopar. you can get cheaper ones but they're not factory. wait till someone on here can tell you which aftermarker pumps are ok to use.
as far as replacing i've found it much easier to remove the bed. you'll have access right to the top of the fuel tank. most shops will do it by dropping the tank and fuel lines, etc. which means more labor to pay for you. it's not that hard of a job if you have the right tools, particularly a "C" clip pliers with several various size attatchments for it.

I replaced the fuel pump in my old 95 dakota. I think it was around $180 for the part.
I got it from napa instead of advance or autozone. The reason was the one from napa had the fuel filter on the bottom (a real filter). The ones from autozone and advance just had a screen.
My 95 was 3.9L and not fast anyway, I chose to have a pump with a real filter instead of just a screen.
I agree, it was easier and less messy for me to remove the bed than drop the tank.

Thanks, guys- I was able to find a Carter module with an OEM Walbro pump for ~$200 and change... The shop is gonna do the work- they were really reasonable (and I don't have to work outside to do it!)
