Message: now that was bad advice...
what kind of knocking are you getting? is it low because its hard to hear, or is it hard because its low in pitch... that makes a HUGE difference.
let us know, and we'll try to help you out.

Message: its not low as in hard to hear its low like a low thump.. but it speeds up when i acclerate. my last truch had to have the lifters chnaged and the knock would speed up but that was really loud and a toatll different sound.. and it only sometimes that it does that.. as for oil.. it gets oil changed every 3000 miles on the dot or before. and its never low... so thats not an option.. thanks for any advice

Message: i am having the same problem with my 98 3.9 sport.
have you had any luck diagnosing it. i was told something about the rear main seal. but nothing conclusive. the problem does not seem to affect the oil pressure or the temp. any ideas would be welcome

Message: Flyboysdak,
I've got the same low end knock. I have'nt been able to locate it either.
Pistolero,
One thing I did do though is contact the Dodge tech's and asked them about the tensioner on my '98 3.9l mag. They asked for my vin # and after about 3 days I got an e-mail that said my truck was equiped with one from the factory! I thought that was kind of odd considering I also have alot of noise coming from the chain housing!
Go figure.
I'm about to give up on the tensioner deal and I have already started looking for a gear drive for the 5.2l mag. Only on prob! All of the ones I have seen so far are for pre-mag. Not the answer I have been looking for.
If anyone has found the solution to the low end knock let the rest of us know. ( it's a thumping sound heard loudest from in the cab at idle )

Message: My '96 3.9L made the same sound you are describing after the dealer ruined the engine. It was the rod bearings, or lack of rod bearings. It happened after they replaced the cam chain tensioner, and forgot to put any oil back in the motor. Doh! It was loudest on the driver side, and mostly from in the cab. They put in a new motor, but now I try to do all the maintance work myself that I can.

Message: 96Dak,
That was'nt what I wanted to hear!
I always do my own maintenance and have not once forgotten to put the oil back in. Of course I do have 92k on it now! Hhmmm!!
Come to mention it I did see a little oil seepage on the rear of the motor when I changed out my clutch, but did'nt think twice because I had already taken to much time playing around under there and had to finish up.
I'll have to look into it this weekend!
Thanks for the input though,

Message: If you have a 3.9L V6, HAVE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER INSTALLED!! I ran a copy of the "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). Gave it to the dealer service rep when I dropped off my '92 V6 Dakota at 80,000 miles. They installed the tensioner as detailed in the TSB and BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled! The truck has had a clacking/clicking/rattle since new - I always thought it was lifter/rocker noise. The fix was not under warranty, so it cost me $390.00, but IMHO, it was WELL WORTH IT! Very quite - at last!
Thanks!

Message: Have a 98 3.9 v6 bought used has 51K on it and low knock at idle and 2000 durango 5.9 same thing also. Everything runs fine, doesn't seem to be problem, change oil on the dot. Dad has f-150 and ford did work and didn't put much oil in it and heard a knock, not as bad as what i hear from the dodge's but they ended up putting a new crank in it. would also like to know what is causing this.
