Message: Ok, first i will say, i am older, have rebuilt carbs all my life, know the carb inside and out. Fact i totally took this one apart 2 times, blown out with compressed air, cleaned with carb cleaner, all new parts and it didnt help at all.
its a 87 DAK with a V6. Seems like it has no idle at all, let throttle down towards idle, it stalls, checked for vac. leaks, cannot find any. Has new dist. new fuel pump (mechanical). New altinator (unrelated problem) new plugs wires and cap. Still it stalls out at idle. For life of me it doesnt seem like the carb.
So my question is, is there anything computer related on these trucks that could cause this symptom? its brothers truck and it/he is driving me crazy with it.
I have to say, this isnt original carb either, It is off a 1984 AMC 258 six cyl engine. same carb as a 318 V8 uses, just jetted smaller. So it isnt that because this carb ran perfect on the truck over a year till this problem developed. This carb has no electric sol. on it at all.. standard type old school carb.

Message: johnZ24, It would seem to me that you are having a lack of fuel in the idle circuit, I don't what kind of carb you are woking on, but if its a carter, the idle circuits are a real pain when they get out of adjustment. If its a Holly, I would think may be the power valve. You rebuilt it 2 times though, That's the only think I can think of. I wouldn't think the computer would do anything wierd now, not after running for a year with the carb.
Good Luck

Message: yeah its a Carter BBD 2 barrel. Yes idle circut is why it was rebuilt the second time, that is what i thought, but using cleaner and compressed air, and working on these carbs lots of times, i cannot fathom any place that could be plugged still. That is why i was asking about the computer, although i know these carbs very well from having 318's 360's and AMC 258's myself over the years, i have never owned a dodge with this computer like on his truck, mine were all pre computer era, and the Amc's were totally different as well.
As for Egr, it has been cleaned, tested, even disconnected and it makes no difference.
BUT... i too sorta feel there is a vac leak some place, reason being, if you cover carb throat with palm of your hand, engine speed increases, engine runs smoother, and it will run on its own although the "idle" is much higher. But we cannot find ANY vac leak at all. The thing is, well brother is driving me crazy with it. I wish he would just sell it and leave me alone!!! LOL
Oh, i have pinched off all vac hoses leading away from engine too, makes no difference either.
I am at a loss, but thanks for the replies guys.

Message: How about a vaccum leak at the intake base? A vaccum leak here will make it not idle. Its a leak somewhere. Did you put a new base gasket on the carb after you rebuilt it?

Message: johnZ24, if the EGR valve is stuck open it wouldn't make any difference if you disconnect the hose (vacuum) or not it could still cause some of the problems you are having. What you might do is remove the EGR valve and block it off and see if that helps. If so, then your EGR valve needs to be replaced. I have cleaned them before and sometimes it helps, other times it doesn't. Good Luck

Message: Well guys, i do appreciate all the idea;s, but i think i found the problem today.
Thinking back when i first did the carb, i had laid all the base gaskets out on the fender well, removed the bock under carb, cleaned it, and laid it there too till i got the carb done.
And if i remember right, brother o mine wanted to help and put the gasket under the block, me only giving it slight thought cause i was into carb at the moment, im sure i asked him if the gaskets used, since there were a couple different ones in the kit, were right, covered the bottom right and he said yes sure. He does know how to r and r most things automotive, just not good at stuff like building carbs, etc
SO today for no real reason i pull the block off after i have carb off to make double sure passages are open, and i find he did use wrong gasket on bottom, it had "sealed" initially, but only by maybe 1/16" after a time it started leaking on both sides of the block, not bad, apparently just enough to kill the idle.
The truck seems happy now, knock on wood! I suppose never assume anything unless you actually see it for yourself that it is right. I don't actually blame him, i more blame me for assuming someone else knew what they were doing.
This is the first time i have ever been on this board, gotten replies quick, no smartass answers, so just want ya to know i really appreciate the help, and a decent board.
But at same time, i "hope" i don't have to come back again! LOL

Message: Well thanks for the invite back. I may pop in along with my other boards i help on, Z24's lumina's. most anyhting that isnt dealing with computers, tho i do know some about some. I grew up in big block carb era. Owned challengers, barracuda's Dusters, Chargers, but all before 73. Been into trucks and offroading some, mostly ford/chevy.
getting to know my 89 Z 24 pretty well, just took out a tired 2.8 and put in a 3.1 wanted to go with a 3500 or 3.8 but couldnt afford one at this time (major work)
Been a home mechanic all my life, and employed as a non ase one for about 12 years till they closed shop and retired.
Anyway, will check back, and check measages here, I try to only reply to problems when i am absolutely sure i am right. Otherwise i say its just a guess on my part. So... have a good day..
