Subject: what fluids for 01 5 speed IP: Logged
Message: hi i just bought my 1st dakota and i love it, but it didnt come with a manual. its a 01 3.9 mag 5 speed and im getting a whirring/grinding from the pumpkin and from what i was told, putting synthetic fluid in the diff or tranny will stop that temporarily. i was wondering what type/brand of fluid to use because it sounds like t is about to go on me and i dont have the money to fix it right now!! also oil and coolant types would be helpful too.

Message: 2001DakSport, as for the rear end, the manual shows 80W-90 gear oil The trans, 10W-30 motor oil
SG/SD multigrade. You can use synthetic, it will help get better gas mileage and less wear. As for the noise, I'm not sure it would stop the noise or not.
Engine oil, I go by the mileage, if it has a lot of miles I go for 10W-40, if low miles (under 75,000) I go for 10W-30. Coolant, it depends what the factory used, If you want to change from what the factory used, the cooling system will need to be completely flushed, and new put in, if you stay with the factory stuff, then just drain and refill. Speaking of cooling systems, if you drain, it would be a good time to repllace heater hose's and radiator hose's as well. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, someone will try to help you.
Good Luck

Message: if that rear diff is making noise(whirring/ grinding)there is no miracle oil to fix that. unless you have an LSD and it's needs the friction modifier for the clutches.
