Message:
I have just bought a 93 v6 4x4 and the clutch would only just release right at the floor and was really stiff.

I removed the slave cylinder to see if there was anything adjustable or loose, when I came to refit it I was a bit concerned about how to line up the rod with the clutch release arm as there is nothing to keep it centred while you refit the cylinder.

Has anyone got any advice on this (both the fitting and if the clutch is likely to be on the way out)

Thanks

mozzer

mozzer, the rod has a little pressure againest the slave cylinder, but I did drop the rod into the clutch housing, I used a magnet on a stick looking thing to get it out. On these there is no adjustment, from what you said though, it would seem if you had a slightly longer rod you would get the clutch to disengage a little sooner. You could try using a .010 shim stock to see if that would help any. Just put a small piece on one end of the rod and replace the slave cylinder. I'm not sure if that would work, but is easy enough to try.

Think I would compare the rod to a new one first to see if the same or not. If the same next is a worn out throw out bearing. Next would be the clutch and pressure plate. If you do go into the clutch I would replace it all including the pilot bearing. Age is against you here.

I bought a new clutch assimily from Auto Zone and it had everything I needed, except the pilot bearing. The pressure plate, clutch disc, and throwout bearing, if I remember correctly it cost about $160 for everything. Plus the pilot bearing was $5. It even has the clutch alinement tool included.
