For the last two weeks or so the engine has been dying. It has not mattered if the engine is warmed up or cold. It might run for 10 miles or 2 feet, or just at idle. There has not been a code, up until tonight.
Again the engine died and now wont start. The computer has kicked a code of 14. The MAP Sensor. I can hear the fuel pump run, and the engine cranks fine. It just wont run.
Is there a test that I can do on the MAP Sensor?
Or is it a replace it and bite the bullett?
Any suggestions?
Trevor in SWMO...
Not driving it for sure tonight.....HA HA
Thanks.

Message: Hey Trev1, don't just replace the map sensor, it will actually run without it, just really poor.
Check the vacuum hose that connects it to the intake manifold, it could be just a bad vacuum hose, not only that a vac. hose could cause some of your other problems. You should check the timing chain if you haven't replaced it. It could be wore out, although I think it would trip other codes as well. Like the fuel injector timing off, or something like that.
Before you start throwing money at it, do some checking first. Try to see if you have an extrem amount of play in the timing chain, just turn the eng. till the timing marks line up then remove the dist. cap, then turn the eng. backwards by hand. and see how many degrees you need to turn before the rotor turns. That's the easiest way to check for timing chain strech.
Remember, you need fuel, air and ingition for the engine to run, if you have all those, then some thing is a little off is all.
Good Luck

Message: Ok. I've replaced the timing chain in the past and after indexing the Dist. I checked it. It appears to be ok.
Heres what i've done.
I tried to start it today and it started very easily and ran for about 30 sec and died.
I checked the volts on the map sensor between a and b 4.84 volts. Volts between b and c 4.80 volts. Both well within specs.
So I cleared the codes in the computer by disconnecting the battery and holding the key in the start position for about 2 min.
Reconnected the battery and rechecked the volts as above...Both within 4.8 and 4.85.
Started the POS and it has been running for about 1 hr without dying.
I dont have a clue what it's problem is. It might run for the next 1 min or run for a week without messing up.
It has not kicked the code 14 since I reset the computer. Only codes are 12 and 55 nither are important. Disconnected batt and End of codes...
I guess I'll put the chain in the bed and have the wife follow me home (12 Miles). If it dies Ill call the Father-in-law and have him tow me home...
This has been a damn good P/U. Only left me walking twice. Once sat night and once 2 months ago when the fuel pump went oout. It has 260,000 on it.
Thanks for the info dakota49...Rack your brain some more and give me other ideas. I've check the volts on the TPS. Is at .65...thats ok. The IAS is working I can hear it and can feel the plunger moving with my finger. When it dyes it has fuel pressure..Only thing else is the coil. Mabee it has a internal crack in it and wants to intermittally F-up...I dont have any more hair left...

Message: trev1, there are few other things that I can think of. One could be the wire going to the coil. I doubt if the coil is bad, every time I have seen a coil go bad it just quit and that was it. Still, I have heard that a coil can go bad slowly, just I've never seen it before myself. Do you have a volt meter? If so you can start checking all the wires going to the computer to be sure you have power going to the wires that supply power to the computer.
I think there are 3 wires, one is hot all the time for memory, and 2 others when the key is on, now the problem is, you may find power at the pin on the outside of the computer, but you need to remove the connector and check for power at the pin on the inside of the connector as well, some times they break where the wire goes through the connector, that can be a very big pain trying to find. The other thing is check the relays in the power dist. box. Sorry man that's all I can think of for now, but I'll keep "racking my brain" for any more ideas.
Good Luck

Message: Yep I have a digital volt meter and come to think of it I had the wiring harness going to the computer.(The big plug in, I cant remember how many are in the bunch)off when I was looking for a possible short when I was working on it and regreased the harness plugs.
I have a Haynes and Chiltons book for it I guess I need to check the harness and find which pin I broke. Come to think of it, the dying started somewhere around this time.
GREAT IDEA Dakota49.
I left it at the father-in-laews last night I just don't trust it. I'm so close to "excellence" at work(not missing a day or being late or an accident) that I don't want to mess it up. (It is a big rase and new truck, trash truck, plus $ to 401K a ring and a jacket)
Ill shut up now...
Thanks..

Message: Wiring connection to the MAP sensor is probably intermittent or bad. Unplug it and clean the contacts, pack with dielectric grease and plug it in again. Check also the entire wiring harness to the throttle body for good, clean connections, and check all ground wires off the battery. This could be a free fix.

Message: Thanks guys. I went to the local junk yard in Joplin and got a used MAP sensor for 25.00. I then went to Autozone and had them test it it tested good. When I went to replace it and noticed the vaccum port was pretty dirty. I Had a pice of vaccum hose and put it on the port and tried to blow through it. It was partially blocked with something and when I tried to blow or suck on the hode whatever it was would move a little and then block the port. I had to suck pretty hard to get it out.
I then took the throttle body off and discovered it was dirty. I cleaned it with carb cleaner and put it back on with the "new" MAP sensor. The truck ran good and made it home (20 miles).
I also got some di-electric grease and put on the connector.
It just goes to show that it was probally an obstruction in the vaccum port that was not letting enough or no vaccum to the MAP sensor causing it to malfunction or tell the computer there was no vaccum in the throttle body. It probally would explain the intermitent problem also. The obstruction would move and cause a blockage and when there was no vaccum on it it would move back and let some vaccum through letting the MAP sensor get a reading.
In any rate I have a extra MAP sensor now and it is probally good. I'll have to get it to Autozone and have it tested.
Bob you were right it was an easy fix. I just had to find it.
Dakota49 and Mr. Lincoln thanks for the help. Hopefully I can return the favor sometime..
