Hello to all...

So far I've replaced the alternator (sounded like the noise was coming from here) and the tensioner pulley. Still have a whirring (whining) noise. It was cheap enough, so I'll swap out the idler pulley this weekend.

If this doesn't silence the problem, what's the possibility that it may be the water pump? I ask because when I have the heater running, there's a slight smell of radiator fluid.

David

hey dave jeff in ohio here.could be a bad bearing in the water pump but id start with the cheap easy stuff first like the tensioner pully like your gonna do.while u have the belt off and the truck is cold maybe start it and see if u still hear it.if u do that would at least rule out anything runnin on the belt(a/c,alt,tensioner,water pump ect.)u say u smell anti freeze when the heater is on too?
is that outside the truck or inside?if your smellin it inside your heater core might be on its way out and that would suck.from what i read on here daks have a problem with that so u might wanna look at http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/dea/338-6.html

i really hope its not ive heard its not a fun job and with winter on its way its best to check it out.im in northridgeville ohio if thats close to u maybe i could help.

are you sure it's not your power steering pump?

Hey guy's just my 2cents worth, but I was working on a 95 Ford mini van last weekend and I changed out the idler pully bearing, and the adjuster pully bearing and it didn't help. I was stumped, until I checked the belt, it had some very smooth marks on it like it had been slipping for a while. I went to Advance Auto and bought a belt 1 inch shorter and solved the problem. It was easy enough to change the bearings, but I doubt now other than the idler bearing that they were part of the problem.
Good Luck

searay245se, I didn't know a new belt would make noise, but any more I don't doubt anything! Do you remember if it was a cheap belt, or a good belt? Just wondering.

your best bet is to go to your local parts store and pick-up a mechanics stethescope and use it to listen to each of the components on the pulley system. You will know instantly which one is the culprit once you listen with a stethescope. Most commonly power steering pump.
