Subject: Stalling on start-up IP: Logged
Message: My old truck, now my lil sister's, keeps stalling when she tries to start it up. It will start, stall immediately, and do those as many as 4 times. After that ti runs perfect, no other stalling or anything once it has actually started. Does anyone have any idea as to the cause of this? It is a 1997 3.9L Auto. 2wd.
Thanks,
Scott

Message: Scott, clean the idle air sylanoid. It's at the back of the t-body. Be carefull removing it don't nick the O-ring. Spray it clean with carb cleaner, don't wipe it or try to push on it just spray it clean. While it is air drying spray the IAC port and let it dry. A LITTLE vasoline on the O-ring will keep from getting the o-ring brittle. Try that and see if it helps...

Message: to test the TPS, use a DVOM and back probe the center wire on the TPS with the pos. lead and ground the other. turn the key to on, DO NOT start the truck. voltage @ idle/closed throttle should be between .4 vdc to .7xx vdc. now move the throttle to full open it should read somewhere between 3.5- 5 vdc. now let the throttle back to idle and you should have the exact reading as the first. if not the TPS could be bad.
oh, one more thing. the battery can be strong enough to start the truck but if it is weak, still cause a rough idle/ stall on a cold start. the best way to make sure it is not the battery is load test it. most parts houses will do this for free. it can't hurt to have it done.

Message: I ended up taking the TB off and cleaning everything. If I'm right, the IAC was a 4 plug thing. Either way, the battery tested bad, which i tihnk my be the root cause. I also ran some sea foam, just to get better gas mileage(it's only averaging 16ish on the interstate @ 70 w/tailgate down, 13ish w/it up.

Any ideas as to what would cause the terrible gas mileage? My sister has a light foot and is lucky to average 15 around town.

Message: most common cause for bad MPG is the O2 sensor. also, bad alignment/ tire inflation, out of tune and driving habits.

Message: So a bad O2 sensor won't throw a code? I mean what is average for the trucks? I drive like a bat out of hell around town and average 12.... I've checked the tire pressure, and the alignment seems to be good.

Message: "Any ideas as to what would cause the terrible gas mileage?" If the battery was bad, all the sensors may have had an incorrect reference voltage. Wait a tankful or two after replacing battery, before chasing any sensors. They may all work fine now.
I drive my truck mostly on the highway, so I get 20+ mpg, and get about 18 mpg combined, and about 16-17 city. That's a 4WD 1992 Dak club cab with V-6 and auto.

Message: i've got an '00 QC 3.9 5spd 4x2 and avg 16-17 city and 22 hwy. have gotten a best of 23.5 hwy @ 75 a/c on and 4 adults with about 500lbs of cargo.
a lazy O2 will not trip a code but cause mileage to drop.
