Subject: 98 Dak- Lots of codes!!! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 Dakota with 115K miles- the check engine light came on with the codes P0121, P0123 (both TPS codes) P0320 (Eng Speed Circ. malfunction), P0420 (catalyst efficiency) and P1391 (Ckshft/cmshft Pos sensor). I had a friend with the same truck who had similar issues, so I went the same route he did and replaced the TPS, the Crank Position Sensor and the catalytic converter (and a muffler- it needed an exhaust anyway!) I cleared the codes and started it up- all codes were gone and the truck ran great. Within a day, however, I got 7 NEW codes- P0300 thru P0306- all misfire codes. I figured, hell- the distributor cap, rotor and wires have never been replaced, lets see what that does- I replaced them along with the plugs. The answer? NOTHING. I then replaced the coil, figuring that may be an issue- nope. I still get the codes- it takes a few miles, then the check engine light comes on. All of the original codes are gone, just the misfire codes are there- in fact, prior to the light coming on I still get these as "pending" codes on my reader. Any ideas of what to check next? I need to fix it ASAP or I can't renew my registration!
Thanks, Dave

Message: Thanks, Larry- I did what you suggested and so far (it's only been around 20 miles or so) no codes! I will keep you posted as the week progresses- I hope to get the truck in while my luck holds out!!!

Message: Uh-oh..
A couple of things: I tried to get the truck through emissions; it failed- No codes, but I was told that here were "4 monitors on" and "you have to go through so many miles (drive cycles) before they clear". Is that so? I would've thought the "hard reset" would've cleared 'em. If not, how many miles do I need to drive before I'm OK?

Message: The repair shop I used to work for around say 50 miles would clear everything. Try 100 miles, it would definantly do the trick.

Message: OK- check engine light's back on- 7 codes, P0300 thru P0306. P0304 and P0306 are "pending". I did however notice something that has repeated itself now that it's colder here- the truck runs great at startup, but as it gets to temp it then stumbles quite a bit like it is way out of time (pinging, missing and farting) then clears up and runs fine- the codes come on shortly thereafter. Any clues? I am confounded- It is almost as if it comes off of a "cold-circuit" setting and can't handle the transition- What sensor(s) wiould that point to- especially if I don't get a code for it???
Thanks for all your help to date- this is great stuff!
Dave
