Subject: Whinning Noise !

Hello
I have a 98 V6 Dakota, auto trans, 2 wheel drive. I recently started hearing a whinning noise coming from the rear end, not sure just where exactly. It's there about 50% of the time. Some times, it is there when I first start up, but disappears after a few minutes. The level of noise does not change with rpm, and is there while in park or in gear. I'm not a mechanic, and will appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank You

It could be from the tranny. There is nothing in the rear end that moves when in park so I doubt that its actually from the differential. Plus when you say it's there when you start out and then it disappears makes me think its temperature related and sounds like mabye the pump in the tranny or torque converter is making the noise. Im sure others have different opinions though.

Thanks shadetree !
I probably should not have said whine. It's more like a high pitch hum, like that from a large generator, or guitar amp. It probably doesn't make a difference !!
.
My truck is a 98 with "almost" 60,000 miles. I make a lot of short trips ! This has just started about a week ago, and I can't figure out what it is. I guess I will wait until something breaks, then I'll know.

My 98 Dakota does the same thing. One mechanic told me that he thinks it is the fule pump. He noticed that some make that noise. He said it does not necessarily mean it is going out. I have REALLY bad mileage any thoughts?

Fuel pump is in the tank. It's one of the few things that will hold a steady sound without changing with ground speed or drive component speed.

Most likely the fuel pump. Easiest way to confirm is to turn the key to "on" without starting the motor and listen for the noise. You should hear it for a short bit and then it will stop. The Fuel pump is designed to turn on and run for 3 seconds with the key "on" to prime the fuel system and then shut off automatically if the computer doesn't detect the engine running.

If you are experiencing poor mileage, it could be the fuel pressure regulator. Unfortunately, you'll end up having the fuel pump assembly replaced replaced to do this as it is a modular pump that includes the fuel pressure regulator, pump and fuel level sending unit.

Best bet is to bring it to a mechanic and have them test fuel pressure and a fuel pressure leak down test. That should point to the regulator or a bad injector(s).

Fuel Pump in the tank. I had the dealer replace mine 4 times! It has never been a perfomance issue, just an annoying noise.

I have a 97 Dakota it is doing the sameting but only in really cold weather. If its warm out their is no noise. Had all the bearings changed in rear end still samething. The sound seems to be travelling down the driveshaft. Changes U joints as well still no help. Mechanic seems to think it is possibly a seal in the trannt that is shrinking when cold. Any ideas?
