Subject: front end noise IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2000 dakota, 3.9 v6 and over 100,000 miles. within the last week i have started to hear like a moan coming from the front end of my truck. it only makes the noise above 20 mph and it only does this when i am goin strait and or turning left, if i turn right the noise goes away. and i cant really hear the noise over 40 mph. the noise also sounds like it is groaning down like a hubby would do when your wife wants you to do something you dont want, that s when i brake. any ideas would be great.

Message: oh yeah and it sounds like it is coming from in front of the driver or just on the driver side.

Message: Can you duplicate the noise in park? Rev the engine to same RPM as driving 20-40 MPH. If you can hear the noise, it's probably the water pump. If you can only hear the noise when driving, it's probably LF (driver's side) wheel bearings.

Message: Check the power steering fliud, some times the power steering pump will make a groaning noise just like my wife. (not in a good way either)

Message: that's what i was gonna say. check your power steering. also rev your engine and turn wheel and see if you hear the noise. if you do then its probly your power steering pump.
as for wheel bearings, usually when turning the opposite direction of the suspected bad bearing it will be louder cause all the weight is transferring to that one side.
do you have 4x4? if you do maybe it's cv joints. also check your tire pressure. is it auto or manual tranny? My manual tranny is very noisy in terms of gear noise.
after a good run put your hand on the center of the wheel and just see if you feel any kind of heat. some heat is normal but hot to where you can't leave your hand on it for very long is not normal. this doesn't always prove effective, just and idea though.

Message: my truck is 2wd and i chekced the power steering fluid, and the level is fine, i turned the wheel and that sounds normal. i only hear the noise while driving and when i brake it sounds like i am slowing down whatever is making the noise.
