Message: Look in a book. has to be a simple answer. Just don't get carried away with force. maybe a good bright flashlight well show something you can't see very easy. is there a bolt on top side of starter that you can't see but was already lose. try getting a finger up there to feel around a bit.

Message: Guy with 87, the manual says to remove the steering shaft, I have an 88 with 4X4 and with mine I can move it back a few inches then down. with 2wd your rack&pinion may be in the way. so you may have to disconnect the steering shaft then pull the starter up.
It not really hard to do, but can be agravating.
Good Luck
