I have a 99 dakota with the 3.9 in it reg cab 4x2.
the first problem is at start up there is a lifter that ticks for about the first block or two and then it quits ticking like its not getting any oil yet I have about 70-80 pounds of oil pressure,it only started doing this a couple of weeks ago and i have change the oil 3 times sense i bought it in july. I do have an exuast leak but I do not think that is it. the other problem is when I go through large puddles like when going back to the hunting blind she starts makeing loud ticking sounds when you hit the accelerator any ideas what this is? thanks

I have a ticking noise too and though it was a lifter; however, after probing around the engine I found a valve/sensor, in front of the battery that was making the ticking. I could feel it pulse whenever I heard the ticking.

I haven't done any research on what this valve/senor is or does. You might want to check and see if it is your culprit.

That valve is probably you purge solenoid. Its part of your evap system. I think that on the 3.9 the common source for ticking is the timing chain.
