Subject: radio and dome lights not working help
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,
Can anyone help...Here is my problem. My blower did not work for my heater.Took the dash apart and found out the blower was ok.It was a bad switch in the dash.So I just unplugged the blower and ran a switch under the dash to the blower. This works fine.Put the dash all back together and now I have no radio or dome lights.
So I took the dash back apart thinking something got unplugged some where.Radio is plugged in.There were a few plugs that wrere hanging loose when i took the dash apart the first time. I didn't see any plugs that looked like they should go together. There is a bigger female plug above the passenger kick panel that I thought looked like it should be plugged in.I looked for male plug for this.I felt above the heater box but did not feel a plug . something has to be unplugged somewhere.I replaced all the fuses but this did not help.I can not find a under dash wiring diagram. please help if you can.

how about the dash ground wire?
and certain year Daks were notorious
for dash trouble due to a bad ground wire
if memory serves right
it was left of the steering wheel and low

I'm pretty sure Larry, daddio or one of the other guys will chime in on this before to long

I thought it may be a bad ground. But I ran a hot wire from the battery to the dome and floor light near the passenger kick panel and they both work.So I'm thinking something is unplugged some where.Any ideas anyone???
Thank You,Jim

did the radio and dome work before you did this? plug the factory blower switch harness back in but disconnect your power source to the new switch to the blower first. probly not a good idea to have two voltage sources to the same unit. It sounds like by having that factory blower switch harness unplugged you're breaking the ground. I,m pretty sure the radio and dome are on one circuit. i'm not sure if the heater blower is also on that circuit. try it and see if it works again then you know that's what it is.

Yep, radio and dome are both on the same circuit. When I took the dash apart in my old 95 to replace the heater core and put it all back together, my dome and radio didn't work.

If I remember correctly, I pinched a wire, but can't recall if it was same wire as blower or not. Sorry, memory is a little fuzzy, it was about 3 years ago i did this.

Hello,
Yes the radio and dome light did work before.I did reconnect the factory power source back into the blower but still do not have a dome or radio.
As for the blower I unplugged it from the dash harness.I then checked it and it is hot coming out of the dash harness.Should work right. So I ran a jumper wire from the dash harness plug to the blower plug on the hot side. Then i ran a ground to the ground side on the blower plug. The blower worked but was stuck on hi and you can not turn it off on the dash.Bad ground? But then why is it stuck on high and you can't shut it off?Bad dash switch?Have I lost you yet?I could live with the blower switch I put under the dash. But I would think it's something simple wrong. And I'm still lost on the radio dome light promblem
Any ideas on my blower switch or dome radio problem I would like to hear them.
Thanks for the help so far,Jim

There is a fuse that has a white plastic piece around it in your fuse box. It is designed to be pulled if you park the truck for a time to make sure that the dome light and radio memory do not drain the battery accidentally. It is also linked to the PCM. Check that fuse as it controls all three.

I bought my truck running like crap, no dome light.

Replaced the fuse, got lights and power. It's an easy one to overlook ( if they equipped that year truck like they did mine ).

There is no fuse with any kind of plastic around it.There is a small relay looking thing made out of tin in one of the fuse holes.I have no idea what this is for. Does anyone know what fuse number is for the radio or dome light.I do not have a owners manual to see what fuse is what.I would like to test it at the fuse box.
Thanks,Jim

The fuse I am referencing is the IOD fuse, located in the panel on the left side of the dash, accessed when you open the door. should be the 3rd from the left in the middle of the fuse set. My manual only covers 97-99 dakotas though, so it may be different in your truck.

I had the same problem very recently. They are both on the same circuit. They share a fuse located in your fuse and circuit breaker box under the hood behind your battery on the right side as you face the truck. I belive it's a 5amp or 10 amp fuse. You probably shorted the circuit out accidently when you were inside the dash.

Hey guys, sorry to bring up an old thread like
this but I have the exact same problem and a
google search brought me here. I took the dash
apart last night for a heater problem, only
difference is my truck is a 1999, and along with
the radio and dome lights my power mirrors and
light under the hood aren't working either. Power
windows and cigar lighter work fine, as well as
any essential lights for running the truck at
night.
Fuse box was the first thing I checked and both
inside and outside boxes look good. I did have a
blown fuse only affecting my power locks but
that's been out since August, I didn't think that
would have any effect on the system 2 months later
but you never know. My A/C also doesn't work and
I've noticed a frayed line going into the
compressor, but that's also been there since
August and I don't think that should be the cause
of any problems but I thought I'd mention it just
in case.

Any ideas on what else to check?

Matthew,
I've got the same problem. I was fooling around with the wires for the engine compartment light and the wires had crossed accidentally and now I have no light there, no dome light, and no radio! Stupid me!!
I checked all the fuses in the box behind the battery, AND on the left side of the dash and they all do not look blown.
I can't seem to fix this problem. BTW, I have a 1998 Dakota V6.

I found it and fixed it! Mike Stager's post led me to it. It's one of those fuses that are secured with an extra 'hold down' piece that's difficult to remove with your fingers.
On the other side of the fuse access cover is a legend of what circuits the fuses belong to. This particular fuse is labled 'INT.LAMPS'(fuse #12) and it's a 10A. Once I got the hold down thingy off and replaced the fuse, the interior lights came on! Thanks guys!!
