Message: Greeting all,
It's been a while since I have posted here....3 yrs maybe?
I have a 2000 Dak 3.9 auto 2wd with about 83120 miles on it. For the last 20k miles or so I have a rattle coming from the motor. There were two, but I replaced the idler arm pulley and they cured one rattle. For the most part it only rattles when the truck is under a load/going up a hill. I thought it would be the rocker arms, but it turns out they are not adjustable because they are hydraulic. Now that it is getting colder out I have noticed the rattle is there until the truck starts to get up to temp. I am hoping it is something cheap like the alternator pulley or one of the accessories pulleys going bad. Would there be anything in the motor that would cause a rattle like this? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Message: sounds like "pinging"/ "spark knock". try using a midgrade fuel like 89 octane and see if it helps. if it has recently started using a little oil, it is probably the intake plenum gskt.

Message: Thats not exactly what I call a cheap fix these days! I will give that a try. As I read what you said, I went outside to check the oil level, its dead on. Seeing that I am 200 miles out from an oil change I think oil leak is not an issue, although the valve cover gaskets need to be reaplced. Thanks for the imput.

Message: Hey 00Dakota, Being careful take a metal stick welding rod, (Acetylene) or any rod about 2' long up to about a 1/4" diameter. Be careful not to get into fan or belt. Put your thumb over the end of rod and place it to ear and start as close as you can get to noise and touch engine or suspected part with the rod. It works as a homemade stethascope. If it is coming from waterpump or front of engine as the engine is being reved it's probably the timing chain. I hope it's just a fuel issue, but on some of the later models the chain goes about where you are mileage wise. I have just read that on here and other places. Good Luck WD40

Message: you could try a spark plug 1 range colder than the stock ones. also, you could try a 180 deg tstat. i definitely believe, from your description that it is "pinging". anything you do to lower combustion chamber temps will help.
several things can cause this. build up of carbon in the combustion chamber. vacuum leaks, blown plenum gskt(but if you are using no oil i doubt that is the problem.
keep us posted.

Message: I agree with daddio that does sound like pinging. Try what he suggested. I have also heard that you can pour a little seafoam into the engine through the intake and help remove some of the carbon build up. So you might try a bottle in the tank and and a bottle through the intake. They say it should smoke a good bit so youll know when its working.

Message: Its my understanding that the egr only operates part of the time if I remeber correctly I think Larry said it operates during deceleration and if the the o2 temp rises. So its not a constant process anyway. So take that and combine it with better more efficient combustion chambers and way better performing cats and there is not really a need for them on all vehicles. I wish I could dig up that old post he had on here about that.

Message: I had an engine rattle myself around 80,000 wasnt a ping . Mine did it while idling too i replaced the timing chain . and all is good now. so i would rule out timing chain, if it does not do it at Idle. I agree with pinging. Also i have an old trick to get rid of all that old carbon build up. What yo do is get a quart of water and while engine is warmed up, you pour the water down the TB while reving it some not over rev but enough so it will stay running. a slow pour just dont pour it all at once. just do that till water is all gone.. then go look at you tail pipe and see all black stuff that comes out of it..lol Help me solve some old denotation ploblems..

I didn't think you were trying to be an @hole, I appreciate the correction.

Message: Since I am in the ever so wounderful state of Virginia these days I am have to bring my truck in not only for emissions testing, but for a state inspection (freaking rip off). I will have the change the oil, I'm getting lazy these days, and check the rattle. I should have an answer this week. I will let you guys know when I know.

Message: 00Dak or Dak00, you may have a blown plenum gasket if your using oil and don't find a leak.
bomapa, you may have the same problem. look thru the TB into the manifold and if you see a little oil puddling that's your problem.
