Subject: Condensor or tension pulley? IP: Logged
Message: Hello to all,
2000 Dakota SLT
I thought it was the alternator making the whining noise, but still have thw whine. How can I determine what it is that is causing this whine--the tensioner pulley, the A/C pump, etc.--so I don't buy something needlessly?
Thanks,
David

Message: take the belt off and spin each by hand. you'll feel if they're not turning smoothly. it's probably the idler pulley. mine will squeak on really humid days. but, when is it not humid in south louisiana!

Message: Make yourself a stethascope using a metal rod about 2' long and no more than 1/4" in diameter, all thread, acetylene welding rod something like that. Put your thumb over the end and put it to your ear, careful around belts, pulleys and fan/s. Touch where the noise seems to come from or near it and you can probably pin it down. At least you can rule out AC, Alternator, Power steering pump, etc... It works, I've done it for years. TobyWD40 "You might need more WD40,HA!"
