Subject: Burn it out? IP: Logged
Message: It may not be a dumb question. I have a small pocket size analog multimeter. When you do a resistence check or continuity you are actually sending a current through the system or wire you are checking if I am getting this right. I have dealt with pretty insensitive stuff, but I am not sure how sensitive some of the stuff is on these trucks. I assume that since the Multimeter uses a 9 volt transistor battery that it must send that amount of voltage and current through the relay or circuit you are testing. Does anyone know if there is anything that would burn up with this small amount of voltage ?

Message: Don't worry about it.
The current limiting resistors stop any possible damage to much more sensitive circuits than what
is in our Dak's.

Message: Toby, I understand your concern, but ? is correct
the meter is only checking to see if there is continuty through the wire, or system. kind of like using a light bulb and wire to test a battery. The amount of current going through is just enough to test your wire, or resisters.
Good Luck

Message: Toby, my '88 is kind of stock, when I bought it , I got it out of a junk yard. It had just what I wanted, a V6 5speed. The guy told me it was complete minus the a/c compresser. It had 172,000 miles when I got it. I took it home, got it running and said, gee, I can't drive this thing like this. So I pulled the engine, stripped it down to the bare block and cleaned it up, it had 3 cly. that had broken rings, trust me that makes them smoke really badly.
Anyway I took everything to a machine shop they did the machine work and bought the parts and I put it back together. If you do something like that, be sure to check all the clearneces, don't assume they did it right. I didn't have any problems, but it doesn't hurt to be sure its right.Right now I have about 16,000 miles on the engine. When I was rebuilding it, I polished the combustion chambers, exhaust ports, and cleaned up the casting flash on the intake side. As well as opening up the exh. manifolds, and polishing them as well. I replaced the cam (stock) lifters, ect.
I work as a truck driver, but I started out as a mechanics helper, but I was 15 at the time.
I've beeen interested in cars, trucks, and just about anything mechancical ever since. I have worked as a big truck mech as well.
Thank you for your kind words, but even the short time you have been on here, you know I make mistakes too.
Good Luck
