Subject: Will it Break?

Message:
Hey Daddio, Trev, Shadetree, Dakota49, Larry, Wisdom is Needed? I am looking at Timing sets and they all have many. If I buy from Auto parts warehouse I get free shipping and no tax,(out of my state), but which and what do I need? In sets I don't see double roller chain listed in the set,is it the better chain and would it be better to buy stuff separately to get it or do I buy the kit of two sprockets and regular single roller chain? Is the difference form $40 to $211 in the steel or what? I only need something for fairly normal driving. 1992 Dakota 3.9 FI Turbo 2wd Automatic, Stock. I am surprised at the selection, but don't know the difference. Thanks, Toby- I got plenty of WD40.

Trev I did look it up and they had a bunch listed to be the right one. I still hadn't got to the rotor check yet I need my son to help get the cap off. I looked at Larry's post about the chain and it was a little scary, The page is on the stretchy stuff page, have a look at it. Toby

I have quite a while ago. The cam timing is pretty in depth stuff. I understood it fairly well. I went onto the net and found a cam timing wheel, printed it out and made me a cam wheel. I have recently replaced the chain and it doesn't need it yet. But the next time I have to gat into the front of the motor im going to do it. The cam timing and the indexing of the distributor will go a long way into making the most of the fuel that goes through it. Timing is everything...
Larry, daddio, shadetree and alot of others really opened my eyes to the potential of these 3.9 motors. great stuff on this forum. Good advice and people who honestly try to get you to fix it without throwing money at it...
Did you know that the Autozone site also gives you access to how to manuals. Gives you enough info to get started and get it broke so you can replace it..HA..

Yeah go with the timing chain set about 150.00 at autozone. Has a warranty. It is always a good idea to change the sprockets with the chain. I believe thats what I did. Wasnt bad at all...

Hey WD40 before you go through with the timing chain thing check the base timing first. remove the #1 spark plug and the dist cap. rotate the motor clockwise with a socket and put at TDC #1 plug. Look at the rotor and see if it is pointing at the #1 mark on the CPS. If it aint you've jumped time. If it is it is somthing else.
Like cutting your fingers, measure three times and cut once. Be sure you get it right the fourth time. IE check it out before you tear it down and spend $ you dont have to.

OK, I checked the rotor and turned engine to #1 plug on Dist., the piston was at the top in #1 cylinder. I did it again and it was the same. I thought that for one time around the piston was down, the next time around it was up. I used a screwdiver and marked it. I noticed something though, when I opened the hood I could smell gas pretty strong and fresh. I hadn't been cranking it since yesterday. If there was a gas leak somewhere would it shut all the fire off to coil and injectors? Thanks, Toby--- hey I just noticed that there are cables that have adjusters on the front to set headlight angles, NICE! they probably have relays or sensors Ha!

Ok WD40 the motor seems to be in time, so the timing chain isnt broken. Youve replaced the crank sensor? the camshaft sensor? switched the ASD shutdown breaker? cap and rotor? can you hear the fuel pump kick when the key is turned on, do you got fuel at the test port on the fuel rail? the coil has been replaced?
You can smell fuel? where is it comming from? I dont think the computer will shut it down for a leak.
There isnt much left....The computer is about it.
Check the connector going into the computer. be carefull dont bend the pins of the connector. Use Di-Electric grease when putting back together. Be carefull dont bend the pins!!!

Just an afterthought. On the drivers side in the engine bay is the main fuse box. Have you checked the fuses? There should be one for the fuel pump, ignition, AC compressor etc... are they all good? Any corrosion?

Toby, i am having trouble following all your posts on this. refresh my memory. exactly what have you changed on the truck to date and what are the current symptoms? i am thinking you may need to try by-passing the ASD relay to see if it starts. or the Hall Effect sensor in the dist.

Just a compliment..Still waiting on WD40..
It cant be anything too bad a broken wire, fuse in the main box. At worst the computer.. He was ready to spend 150.00 for a chain set. About the cost of a computer I think. never priced one. Almost afraid to.

Wow, got all the brains together. 1992 Dakota 3.9 FI. turbo 2wd automatic 169,000 first breakdown. In order Fuel Filt. Crankshaft Pos. Sen., Cam Shaft Pos. Sen., Dist. Cap., Rotor, Plug Wires, Coil. I redid wire splice by battery, fuse box under hood. I took off the grounds everywhere I found them and cleaned. I undid the 60 pt. connector cleaned and regreased and put back very carefully. I put the ASD relay in the Starter Relay spot and Vice Versa,( they had the same number),and I left the Starter relay off after I switched them and it wouldn't crank. I took negative cable off battery and turned key for 30 secs. after I changed the sensors and cap. Charged the battery back to full. Ran down after all the cranking. I checked for voltage going into both wires on coil--0vlts.
Oil pressure gauge no move when cranking but Rotor does. #1 point on dist. matches # 1 cylinder. I think thats it, before I came here I knew none of that. Thanks guys I kinda like Coyles- Coils- Sparky, Just teasing. TobyWD40

Well if there is no voltage to the coil that would lead me to think that the computer isnt getting the required signals to fire the coil. I would start to trace the wires and look for broken wires or damaged wires.

WD40.....After you check the wiring, and the mtr wont start the only thing left that I can think of is the computer. Try a salvage yard and then the auto parts place. Sorry man Im out of ideas.

try putting a mechanical gage where that oil sendin unit is and see if it builds a little pressure while cranking. if it does it may be the oil sending unit is bad causing the ASD to kick in and cut power to the coil.
