Message: Need some opinions... gonna do a tune up on my '99 3.9 (new plugs, wires, rotor and cap) and put in a drop-in K&N air filter. My truck has 120,000 miles on it and original oxygen sensors. Should I replace them now or wait until I have a noticable change in mileage? Currently, I'm getting about 17 on highway/15 in city...so no changes since I bought it new in late '98.

Message: is that really the best you've gotten since new? you must have a 4x4, CC, Auto. my '00 QC 3.9, 4x2, 5spd w/ 3.55:1 & 235/75/15 tires gets 23-24 hwy and 17-19 city. i usually don't recommend changing them unless it checks bad, throws a code or gas mileage takes a sudden dump. i've seen O2's go over 130k miles.

Message: I have a CC 4x2 and get those numbers most of the time. I usually don't hit the throttle hard, only when I need to pass or keeping up with traffic on hills, etc. (Cincinnati is pretty hilly).
Now I'm wondering if I should have replaced the o2 sensors a long time ago....maybe they're bad and that's why my mileage stinks.
I also had what Larry calls the death flash shortly after I bought the truck due to pinging.
That could be the issue too, huh?

Message: yep, the death flash can do that. you could get a new NGK/NTK O2 sensor from Summit or Jegs in think relatively cheap(30-40 bucks). change just the front.
and you can re-gain some of the timing that the death flash took away by doing the CPS mod. very easy to do.

Message: daddio,
Do you recommend only changing the front o2 sensor to save me some money (because the rear sensor is probably ok) or to change the way the engine performs from the death flash?

Message: the PCM uses the front O2 to adjust fuel as necessary and the rear O2 is just to tell the PCM if the cat is bad or not. so, yes you can save a little by just changing the front O2.
