Hey Guys, 1992 dakota 2wd 3.9 auto. My truck suddenly stopped no noise no warning it just quit. I fixed the wire splice and checked the ASD,and fuel pump relays. I changed the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, cap, rotor and plug wires. I am still broke down. I am going to rip open all the wire harnesses next. I was at wally world yesterday buying some more WD40,(a man can't have enough WD40), and I found this tape over in the electric stuff. It's good down to real low temps and up to 176 degrees. It binds to itself by stretching as you wrap and has no adhesive on it like the old friction tape and it is thick. I fixed a compressor hose with it and it held. Anyway anybody with new thoughts about the truck speak up please before I tear her apart. Thanks Toby WD40

Hey Trevor, I'll do that, the coil on it is as old as the truck and it's as old as the hills in Missouri. 169,000 miles and this is the first breakdown. I need to check all the wires anyway besides the coil, but I am trying to do one thing at a time because I'm really curious about exactly what is causing this. Your truck is a 92 right, I was thinking it was you, so you understand whats going on. Have you ever fished in the White river I think it was called and I believe it was in Missouri. We went several places while there, Chillicothe, Mt. View,(home of Grandpa Jones) and some place in the Ozarks where they had people doing stuff like making fiddles and Hominy and all sorts of old crafts. It was a beautiful place ,but I only saw that big clear river, not enough time to fish. Thanks, Toby

Yep. Good Goggle Eye in the White river. You got to be talking about Branson Mo. Silver Dollar City ( steal your dollar city). Lake Taneycomo is the name of it. I graduated college there. 5 years of great times. But Branson sucks way too many people.

I fish alot in OK. Grand Lake...

The coil is 28 plus tax. Yes mine is a 92 4wd 256,000 plus miles and gaining fast. Got 22 mpg last week. It still wont run above 3200 RPM without cutting out...I AIN'T GOT NO HAIR LEFT.

2 Questions; how do you get 22 mpg? My 2wd only gets 17>18 & it only runs to 32k when it feels good! Any clues about the 92 fart an die syndrome? I've replaced all kinds of parts & sensors. No codes, if engine is warmed up to full temp before driving it runs good (up to 32k) I live on the side of Kilauea volcano so I don't have much problem warming it up (unless i'm in a hurry) & at least I'm headed down hill. Only 74,000 mi. on truck(nowhere to go). That's as old as the hills around here.

I drive about 80 miles a day to work and back. Most of it on he highway at 70. I've always got around 19 before I started working on it. I'm sure it's got to do with the Distributor, and indexing it. I'm still not getting what J and J and others are. They got me beat be several MPG. I have no mods Motor is bone stock. I wont be happy until I can get 25 MPG or so.

I would be happy to give up the MPG for Hawaii, for a while.

Start checking your compression, plugs burning slightly tan? Do you have any vaccum leaks? Is the gas your getting any good? 70,000 is just broke in.
I'll let everyone know what it was when I get my fingers healed up. ( I had a fight with the mower blade, It WON!!!!)

Keep working on it youll get there. Daddio and others can help. Just ask they give good advice, just give good background on what you've done!

Have you verified that the rotor is turning? What about oil pressure when you trying to crank the engine? If you not building oil pressure than I would bet the timing chain broke. If the rotor is turning it could have possibly jumped time.

Ya know Shadetree, I kinda have had a sick feeling inside that it's the timing chain. If the oil gauge doesn't go up as I crank that would show a bad chain? Would that cause no fuel to be pumping either? I made some test leads for my tester last night that will help me get to some of the wiring better. I will check rotor and oil pressure today too. Thanks Shadetree. Hey Trev how bad are your fingers?

I know some gm vehicles have the fuel pump is tied to the oil pressure sensor so that if the engine were to lose oil pressure (say the vehicle is wrecked and flips on its roof) then the fuel pump is shut down to prevent a possible fire. I am really not sure if dodge uses this or not. The timing chain has to be intact for the pump to work. So when you are cranking the engine if the chain is broken you won't build pressure.

shadetree, what you are talking about is the ASD system. yes, dodge uses one.

Toby, i doubt that your timing chain is broken. you would have noticed that when turning it over trying to start it. if it would turn over at all.

just pull the dist cap and make sure the rotor is turning. have you checked to make sure there is power to the coil? power to the fuel pump?

Just a thought....If the ADS shut down the truck, wouldnt it kick a code? I still think it is the coil, if it hasnt been checked or replaced it sounds like it is the culprit. No fire would tell the fuel pump not to pump...Right? Nither the coil or the fuel pump are hooked up to the computer, at least when the coil on mine went out it didn't lick a code. Same with the fuel pump.

As for my fingers, I should have had stitches. I got my left ring finger and little finger. Both were real deep. if I had went for stitches I probally would have got 12 or more. They will be better by Sat.
Toby check the coil....

Hey Everybody, I can stay on subject. Changed the coil, still no electricity to coil or injectors. I tried to crank it and as it was cranking oil pressure gauge stayed flat. I assume you guys have done timing chains. Which one should I buy and what special tools do I need. I think I can do it if I know the tricks to not losing my timing like trev did Ha! bettter to lose timing than fingers right Trev.I better order the book and probably the right chain, gears and waterpump, thermostat. Everthing has to move right. Any help you guys give, appreciated Thanks Toby I've got WD40.

WHOA, WHOA, did you check to see if the rotor was turning while cranking the motor? i hate to see you throwing parts at this thing. if the rotor is turning it is NOT the timing chain. even it it down't turn it could be the dist drive gear and/or pin.

Hey Daddio, I have to wait on my 17 YO. to get home. I can't get to the Dist. without getting hung in the motor or something. I put the tires back on. It really makes it easy to work on if they are off and you jack it down, Just a tip for impaired old men or guys who cut off their fingers, HA! not really funny but I bet you took that safety bar off your lawn mower Trev., Its there so you can't get to the blades while mower is runnin.

Thanks Problem Child, I read it and it makes sense up to checking the movement on the new tensioner, what kind of measuring devices is he using and what about the welding rod marker and the round chart thing he used with it. I don't start to understand the valve opening and closing measures either, mainly the device he used to measure the movement. Thanks Toby, I know why mechanics make the bucks. I don't think we have any here that even start to do all that to change a timing chain.
