Message: after putting another pump on last week i've been having problems since ever since. the new pump is still making noise and i don't feel it's working like it should be. i bled the system, and got the system free of all air bubbles. i can hear the bearing in the pump when i turn the wheel and especially when i give it a little gas. i did read though that if your pulley isn't lined up just right with the serpentine that it will put drag on the bearing and cause this noise. i checked this when the truck was running and it looks fine. but when i shut it off and look it actually looks like the pulley could stand to be driven on a very slight bit yet, the belt is right up against the rim of the pulley. i didn't think it would be an issue when i put the belt back on but apparently it might be.
Now, for the other problem. when truck is cold the power steering feels great. then after my ride home the steering is back to stiff again. almost like the fluid breaks down and loses viscosity and affects the pressure. i put atf-4 in like the manual says and the level is just slightly over the cold mark when it's cold and at hot when it's hot. I used atf-4 from advance auto and wonder about it's quality versus mopar atf-4.
Also from my other posts i mentioned there are no leaks anywhere in the rack or lines and i don't have air coming into the reservoir when i look in there and the color is dark red.
I just wonder first off if i have a defective rebuilt pump right from the get go. if it's not defective then i wonder if the belt not being lined up properly with the pulley may have damaged the bearing. i've run it about 5 days so far.
my last concern is maybe the pulley isn't on the pump shaft tight enough. i put the original one back onto the rebuilt with the pulley kit and some people have told me i should have gotten a new pulley cause the old ones can walk off the shaft. i question that though because if you need to press it back on you wouldn't think it could move.
so the way i see it is i don't think i can press the pulley on anymore while the pump is still on the truck, not enough room to get that tool in there let alone two wrenches to drive it. so if i'm taking it off again i'm exchanging the pump as defective and getting another. Hopefullyl advance will do this. i wish i could afford a mopar pump because i know this is the kind of stuff that usually happens with rebuilt/remanufactured parts. should go faster for me this time around.
guess i'll still use the atf-4 but maybe get mopar instead. would there be any advantage to using traditional brake fluid versus atf-4? also what happens if the two combine if i don't flush it completely and get all the atf out?

Message: Could there be blockage in the rack or lines that would cause pressure loss? Or mabye something happens to the seals in the pump or rack when the fluid warms up?

Message: advance auto swapped me another pump to try. same this with this one. pump growls when gassing truck and terrible power steering. after reading a little more about cardone i decided i was trying another brand. i got another pump at autozone and put that one on. still the same thing. i bought new power steering lines to put on but when i got under there i couldn't justify replacing the ones that were there. they didn't look bad at all. the ones on there are still factory and the truck is 5 years old.
after 3 pumps and all 3 doing the same thing i'm stumped! i bled completely till no air at all. only other way to get it better would be a devac tool. one thing i did notice. the new return line i bought does not have a brass coupling in it like the factory does right before it connects to the return line on the pump. i had this line off and looked at it. it looks like some kind of fitting that would narrow the flow of the fluid i guess to cause more pressure. the new return line kit doesn't have that at all! it's just straight through hose that you hose clamp to the fitting that screws into the rack.
now, maybe there was something different about factory steering pumps that required this coupling on the return line but what about rebuilt pumps? i wonder if i put this new return line on if i would get the pressure i need now instead of this problem with the last 3 pumps.
can someone tell me why this coupling is on the OEM power steering return line? also, i can never seem to get a hose clamp tight enough without it stripping out on current return line to keep it from rotating on the shafts of the fittings. i believe if those hoses rotate then you can suck air in from the return hoses.
