I have a '99 3.9 and the dealer reflashed the computer in '00 or '01 (IIRC) due to pinging (per technical service bulletin) and retarded the timing. Should I not do any of the mods that others are doing because of this or are there other things I should do?

This is crap and what a dealer does to solve a
piston ping problem
The reason it pings is because its to lean the
air'fuel ratio should be checked and corrected
not pull timming out this is pure supidity just
a quick fix more like a band aid not addresing the
true problems that exsist the A/F Ratio
Yes still can do all the mods

Thanks for the response Larry. Will the modifications change the timing back to factory or even better than factory? Will the pinging return?
(sorry for all the questions, I do basic maintenance myself like brakes, oil changes, coolant changes, but haven't gotten deeply into the internals of the engine or making modifications...time to learn a few things!)

larry is dead on with this timing retard is only done as a quick fix usually when its pingin its the fuel/air mix usually runnin to lean
retardin timing is only done when sprayin nos in a motor

Keep in mind, a leaking plenum cover creates a lean mixture as does cracked or disconnected vacuum hoses.

The leaking plenum is/was the reason most of the trucks got the so-called death flash. When I took mine in, under warranty, I told them to just fix the plenum and keep their hands off the computer.
