Message: You can put the 5.2 & 5.9 with the trans, but don't know how long the trans will last. The 4.7 is a fairly new engine, so I doubt if it would work with your trans. I could be wrong though.
If you go for a V8 try to get the matching trans as well, would save headachs in the long run.
Good Luck

Message: the easiest way would be to find a donor truck same yr as yours, with a 5.2 or 5.9, rip out the engine, tranny and pcm. put it in your truck and wire up the 2 extra injectors.
if you search here:
http://mark.dodgedakotas.com/
you'll find this has been discussed on numerous occasions.

Message: by "old 5.9", how old are we talking?
if it's earlier than 93, it's a premag and will not just bolt up. Different style motor mount bosses and the accessory bracket wont bolt up.
if it is a Magnum, then you'll need a 46re transmission for your 98. you'll also need a new engine wiring harness (unless you want to cut into yours, proper PCM, balanced flexplate, correct dampener (if not with the engine), and possibly a different torque converter (change between years). all of your accessories will bolt up just fine.

Message: It is just simpler to find a truck with a V8 already in it. Not saying that it cannot be done. I am just saying that it saves so much headaches. It also gets pricey.
Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer. well at least a stock one
