Subject: Engine misfiring, no codes, cold start IP: Logged
Message: For the past month or so, when I run my 2002 3.9L V6 5-speed dakota, I have a large loss of power and misfiring, and drop in RPM when running between 1000-2000 rpm. If I give it a lot of gas, it will return to normal operation. This goes on until the engine warms up, and then I seem to have no problem. In addition, when I slow to a stop, the RPM will stay around 1200RPM until I have come to a complete halt, and then the rpm will drop. I have replaced plugs and wires, air filter, and fuel pump, and none of these have fixed the problem, so I am thinking that it must be a sensor. any ideas? thanks

Message: that's what a few people have told me, so I think I'll go ahead and replace it. does anyone know if you have to clear the codes after you replace it? I would like to do it myself, but I don't have the equipment to read and clear codes

Message: Siouxfan, go to Auto Zone they will read the codes then you will know what the problem is, that's better than replacing parts hoping it will fix it.
If it won't give any codes, it could be a bad ground. I had a Pontiac that the check eng. light would come on and then I couldn't get codes, turned out the bad ground caused the computer to clear its self. I doubt that all the codes would be cleared on a truck as new as yours though, just cause a lot of problems.
Good Luck

Message: Hi, I had a very simlar problem, I have 2002 3.9 4x4 dakota with a auto. It would back fire in the intake after about two min of driving it would only happen once and awhile, if I stayed at a low rpm it would be ok but hit the gas back fire city, alot of the times it was either damp or humid the problem would happen once every 6 months or so and go away, it would backfire I would pull over shut off the engine and it fixed the problem. but two weeks ago it happened everyday I changed all but the collant senor, but I had no choice but to take the truck to the dealer, it was running so bad I could not drive it. they found there was a leak in the intake valley gasket they replaced it, and it runs great I guess the gap got bigger over ther years. Anyway they said that this gasket is a common problem you may want to get it check out I lived with this problem for 3 years so i know your pain, hope this helps P.S it cost me 749.00 dollars but it runs nows

Message: Sorry I didn't update.. found the problem
after a lot of different things. Mine was
the oxygen sensor, I believe downstream.
Replaced it and never had a problem again,
the only reason I found it was it finally
tripped a code after about 2 years of
driving. Relatively cheap fix to try if
you can do it yourself
