Message: I recently replaced my water pump and thermostat on my 97 3.9. The pump is new not a rebuilt. The thermostat is a 195. Prior to the change the operating temp was always below 200. Now, if I drive for 30 to 45 minutes it reaches 230-240. I cannot figure out what the problem is. It reached 260 one day. I had to pull over and let it cool down.

Message: First of all check the thermostat. Make sure it is not installed backwards. If thats in correctly make sure its opening by feeling the rad hoses for pressure. Also check for air in the system, what I usually do is disconnect one of the heater hoses and fill the system till it comes out the hose. This lets the air escape and you are less likely to have air gaps in the system. I learned that from the local radiator shop. Finally check the rad cap and make sure it is holding correct pressure on the system.

Message: I checked the hose for pressure after 40 minutes of driving and i felt no pressure at all. I know the spring side of the thermostat is in the engine. Now I'm not certain if that is the right way. I still have to check for air in the system this weekend. The cap is good.

Message: yes spring side of tstat goes into the engine. if anything try taking out the tstat and see if it still overheats. could be a bad tstat, could you you got the wrong waterpump. later models with the serpentine belt use a reverse rotation from earlier years.

Message: Not sure about the pump. I know that when I started up I forget to put the heater hose on and a lot of water was shooting out. I was thinking about remove the t-stat just to see what it does. This started before the new pump went in. I had replaced the t-stat and this started happening. Had a timing chain guide break so while i was in there, changed the pump and another t-stat and still gets to hot.

Message: probably a bad tstat. i hope you changed that little bypass hose while you were in there. is is a real PITA to change without taking the pump off.

Message: I changed the bypass hose. Just looking at it, I could see it would be a pain.
