92 dakota 3.9 v6 calif emissions. engine backfire after engine is warmed up. very intermitent. Very recent mtr work. plenum gasket, head gasket,h20 pump gasket... heads torked to 105 lbs, rockers to 40 lbs...all per chilton book. This code in te book says evaperator purge citcut, an open or shotrened condition detected in the EVAP solenoid circut.....????? what does this mean?? is it possible that i got a vaccum hose wrong?? how do I fix this. what does this EVAP solenoid look like. wheres it located?? possible fixes?? Motor runs good, good torque etc... Fuel pump and filter are both new this weekend(it has been a expensive weekend)mtr work last weekend and fuel pump went out 35 miles later.

thanks

Trev1, its a small electric valve (EVAP solenoid)
that should be in front of the throttle body passenger side. Yes if you left off a vacuum line or broke one it could cause it, also a loose fuel cap could also cause the same code as well. What the system does is take fuel vapors from the gas tank and burn them in the engine when its running. A canister at the left front of the truck, (under the hood) is where the can is mounted, it has lines going from the tank, and I think one line going from the can to the throttle body (vacuum line) It sucks the fumes from the can into the engine.
I would check the lines, and the electrical connector first then see if there is a problem.
Yeah, remove the gas cap and replace it, being sure to turn it 3 clicks when you tighten it.
Clear the codes and see what happens.
Good Luck,

Checked the vacuum hoses per the diagram. they are hooked uo correctly. the elect connector is plugged in and clipped. I did find a vacuum hose that was cracked and broken at the canister and replaced it. hope that this fixes the problem.
anyone else have any ideas ???

I'm willing to try pulling straws fo fix this. too many more backfires and something is going to fly apart...don't need to throw any more money away....

just an update....the broken hose wasnt it. the truck after it was warmed up and driven for 15 miles or so would "cut out". give it gas and it falls on it's face, backfires but stays running, let it idle and it's ok for a minute or so. I un-pluged the purge solenoid and drove it home, it ran crappy, but no backfires. It's raining in Missouri so i'll check and se if I got the EGR valve on backward or something tomorrow....

Larry whats next??..
anyone else?????

"Cutting out" and then backfiring might indicate an intermittent lose of spark. You may have more than one problem and they may not even be related.
