Subject: V6, missing - rpm spikes esp. in cruise IP: Logged
Message: My 2001 V6 3.9L Quad has a bad missing or should I say RPM spike which creates a jarring effect while driving. It's very noticeable while in cruise control but can be noticed even at startup. At startup my RPM's go all over the map as if searching from 4 grand to 1200 and back.
I've had the truck checked for vacuum leaks (whatever a mechanic could do) and read with an OBD reader. His finding was that I should drive the unit again until the check engine light comes on again which hasn't for some time but the problem is always there.
Where should I start? My mileage is about 160,000 kilometers. Suggestions appreciated tks.

Message: I had the same problem. took me 5 trips to the dealer. Now it may or may not be the same problem but turns out it was the throttle position sensor. I actually found out about it in these forums.
Tell them to check it or change it. Only about $50 dollar item.

Message: Ah, thanks Kev...I just called a dealer and they lead me in the direction of having my throttle something or another cleaned out due to gum ups etc. It sounded pretty similar to your solution. I'm going to give this is a shot with the dealer although he stated around 100 dollars.
Will post back on my finds. Also we'll give my o2 sensors a look at aswell as I'll have them read my engine using an OBD.

Message: Had that same exact problem. Didnt trip any codes either when it did it. Spent 30 bucks on a TPS sensor and that fixed it. Anyone can change this part out. V6 Its on the driver side of throttle body. Another thing id get the TPS from dodge because some aftermarket ones are off.

Message: you need a volt meter to set the sensor correctly.

Message: the TPS is plug and play. there is NO adjustment unless you modify it.

Message: Well, after taking heed from this topic about the (TPS) Throttle Position Sensor I went ahead and found it on my engine, removed it and applied some thermoelectrical paste to the contacts, reinstalled and now I'm cruising along in what feels like a new truck!
For the first 10 kilometers my eyes nervously twitched to the RPM needle with each road bump but to my surprise I was coasting smooth as silk. It was the sick in the gut feeling I kept expecting as the jarring did actually hurt the stomach.
Anyhow, I priced the part locally at 50 dollars and it's in stock however I'm going ride it out for now as I just did a 100 kilometer trip beautifully today.
Tks so far to these forums members...you rock.
This post is also good info...

Message: Hey, still cruising along on the original unit! 3 months of bliss and it's all been but a bad memory. Seriously I've had a few quotes to embarrassing to post here with possible fixes so I really thank this board a hella lot.
Never take for granted that simple peace you get out of a functioning cruise unit...it was shear hell for me and my passengers, not too mention the tear on my tranny when it would surge/loss violently.
Cheers forum'rs...
PS...speaking of violent! What's with the space shuttle like launch I get outta my cruise unit when approaching small inclines. It's as if I manually floored the gas pedal sheesh! LOL...it freaks everyone out when it happens LOL...
On a sad note it is actually a safety hazard if cruise may happen to be used on rain slick roads or worse, snow packed roads. The correct answer is never use cruise in those conditions but you can't stop everyone.

Message: Rockin Rog, thanks for letting us know what the problem was, its good to know just what the problem was, and the fix. Just so you know the MAP sensor can do some weird stuff as well, like it may run fine for a few minutes then bam, it stops or runs really bad. Not quiet what your problem was, but something to think about. The best thing to do is remove the Throttle body once a year and clean with some kind of spray cleaner to remove as much carbon as you can, it will really help if the throttle body gets very clogged up with carbon. Just s suggestion.
Good Luck
