Probably the cheapest mod is an IAT Adjuster from Speedtweaks - $35 and makes a real difference in the summer. Haven't had it through the winter yet; designed to help out in warmer weather. Some folks have made their own intake plumbing from PVC pipes and the such with success spending the real cash only on the inevitable cone filters (~$40-50 for the filter).

If you install a V8 throttle body, you may need the V8 cable, too, $22 if I recall from Speedtweaks as well.

I went "cheap" on the exhaust by simply cutting out the stock muffler and replacing it with a Gibson @ around $80, all work done myself & with a friend. Sounds really good, but haven't noticed any performance gains overall. No knowledge on the cat.

MSD Superconductor wires at $65 upped my mileage 1.5 points, but no difference in performance that I can tell. I hear they're all the same, so you may find equivalent wires for less.

180-degree thermostat is around $10 and doesn't make a noticeable difference in anything (from my experience), but supposedly extends the life of the motor. Wouldn't know first hand, but I got one.

Replacing the crank pulley with a power pulley of some sorts seems to be really good bang for the buck; I haven't done this only because I will occassionally idle for an hour at lunch. I'm sure someone else can drop in and give you the skinny.

Hope this helps. I'll be watching this thread for more ideas.

Speedtweaks is at: http://www.speedtweaks.net/ for reference. There's some good advice for budget mods there, too.

I know it's a long post, but it's so close to my interests right now!
