Message: I took the valve covers off and they look good everything is tight and it is getting oil to the heads. I changed the water pump and that took care of my knocking noise. Truck runs really great down the road and it still has the low oil light on. Going to try and check the oil pressure again today. Where is the pressure relief valve on the 88 3.9l trucks? Is it in the oil pump itself? Thanks for all the help.

Message: Yes the pressure relief valve is on the oil pump, which is inside the the oil pan, well actually to get to the oil pump you would need to remove the oil pan and its bolted to the block at the rear of the engine.
After you check the oil pressure with a gauge it could be its the oil sending unit and not the oil pump, or other problems. I think at idle you should have at least 10pounds, and at 2500 RPM about 40 pounds.
I had a simular problem and it turned out to be the connector that plugs into the sending unit was dirty, I sprayed some carb cleaner in it then used air to dry it out and it was fine after that.
Good Luck
