Subject: cooling fan clutch IP: Logged
Message: i noticed a lot lately that when i start my truck after sitting overnight it roars really loud and it's coming from the cooling fan. I have to accelerate kind of quick before it goes away.
Lately the truck has felt like its got no power. I have done complete tune up including wires, plugs, cap, rotor, air filter. No codes either. Plugs burning nice brown. But you step on it and the response is just not good. I hate trying to merge into traffic. I'll have to downshift to either 2nd or 3rd to really get anykind good acceleration but that kills my MPG. Then it dawned on me about hearing this fan sometimes and i'm wondering what the odds are of it having something to do with the loss of power when accelerating. I only get the roaring first thing when starting and not all the time. Could the clutch be sticking and not make anykind of roar?

Message: The mechanical clutch on the fan is sticking. It will cause a large loss of power and MPG because of the extra rotating mass. Your best bet is to either buy a new clutch assy or go to a salvage yard and pick one up there. You could try to lubricate the one you have, but that is only putting a band0aid on the problem. You could also scrap the entire mechanical fan, and just use your electrical fan. Hope this helps.
