Subject: K&N filters IP: Logged
Message: lately i've been reading a lot of bad stuff about K&N. What i'm reading is that it's a good filter for WOT and if you've done other intake mods but for normal everyday driving and longevity on the engine it's not so good. Also read they let more dirt into the engine. I've alway had a K&N filter since i got my truck but all this reading has scared me and i took it out and put a paper filter back in. this is probly one of those subjects that will go either way. Only other thing i have is a flowmaster 50 series. Anyone care to elaborate on this subject? I have noticed slightly better gas mileage with the paper filter surprisingly but overall throttle response kind of stinks.

Message: I tested the K&N drop-in for over a year and 25K miles in my truck. There was zero improvement in gas mileage and power. They do not claim mpg improvement, BTW. Waste of money.

Message: I didn't notice any real gains when I first got my K&N but man when i cut the edge off the air hat it was night and day engine sounded nice and throaty and a load and MPG and Power seemed to improve, ofcourse this isnt like dyno proven power but its deffinately better than before. as far as its filtration quality really to be honest I dont care if it lets some tiny ass particles of dust in I drive on the street in a city or highway you dont encounter that much of a problem with junk like that unless your playing in dirt. and really its all about the performance if my engine loses some life from it its all good by the time it does any form of damage its probably time for a rebuild anyways.

More vagueness. Do you have mpg numbers before and after, from many tankfuls?

Message: Nope, I put a K&N in as soon as I got my truck never ran a full tank before I got the K&N. You can belive me or not its up to you but i can guarantee that with a few minor tweak as i did with cutting the air hat you will gain power and probably a very small increase in MPG. stuff like this is not really going to give much gains as it is seriously its just an air filter your MPG increase could be maybe .5 but or an even less noticeable amount dont expect junk like that to give you +2mpg.. besides its a washable filter its not a waste of money at all more up front to save much more later. It may not have done anything for you Bob but I am pretty darn sure alot of people here do use these filters and do see good gains. I may not have solid numbers because frankl I dont care I got the power out of mine i wanted i drive city in a truck that sucks the gas anyways i stopped caring long ago about mpg

Message: read the whole page,
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/General/BBBNewsArchivesPageDetail.aspx?News_ID=126&sm=
"Don't accept all of what you see on a website at face value. In this case the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, to which the K&N website refers, does prohibit requiring a purchaser to buy an item from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible for service under its warranty.
What K&N doesn't tell you is that a manufacturer is within its rights to specify that the warranty will not cover use of parts that are not equivalent in design or quality to its own parts. If you decide to use other parts, use caution unless you're expert at determining the quality of such parts."
and that doesn't mean just K&N it could be any part or parts

Message: I recently put a Air Raid intake system on my truck and it works great. Don't know about mpg's yet but the improved acceleration is very noticeable. Freeway driving is awesome in the passing gear. The sound is pretty cool too.
