Subject: how to adjust idling? IP: Logged
Message:
How do you adjust the idling on a Dodge Dakota,96,3.9L?
I have a feeling that it idles to low to the point that the truck will shot itself off if I don't give it gas.
Once I run it for a while it gets better and truck wont shot off but I notice that the RPM's are very low. I would like to adjust it at least to 1K RPM while waiting for the green light.
Any suggestions as to how to do this?

Message: I think these trucks are notoriously low idlers. Mine idles around 200 waiting for the green light every now and again, but it usually stays around 400rpm. But a 1000 would be way too high you would have a hard time stopping, but that’s just my .02

Message: No adjustments! and your idle wouldn't be that low Adam in Neutral around 750 + or - 50 rpm your engine would be loping considerable your PCM was preprogramed with a set idle unless reprogramed or engine mechanical issues going on and don't let me feel as a as! know it all everyone I work on these trucks thats where they seem to be at

Message: RPMs are 600 in drive and not adjustable. If you are having problems with it stalling, something needs fixing, not concealing. Check fault codes. It's probably either a low battery, bad TPS or TPS wiring, or intake vacuum leak.

Message: Or , you need to clean the throttle body and the
Air Intake Control ( at back of throttle body)
just be careful doing it and you will not need a
new gasket or 'O' ring..

Message: There is an adjustment u can do, but before doing it everything has to be in correct working order.Another thing to remember is the stock tachometer isnt accurate so u may be idling at 800 and it shows lower or higher.
To adjust idle simply block the iac area with ur hand or something and adjust the idle close to 800 rpms. I cant recall if the manuals have a differant idle speed. Dont adjust your idle to high sometimes it can cause the pcm to freak out and make the motor self rev.
Keep in mind even if the tb blades are closed to much a properly functioning iac has enough adjustment to keep it at the proper idle speed anyway. The only issue from the TB blades being closed to much is when u let off the gas quickly u get a stumble thats quickly recovered. The stumble comes from the iac having to make large adjustments from closed to open to to maintain a proper idle speed. Thats really the only sign u may want to adjust the idle screw.
Ill say it again only adjust idle if ur 100% certain everything is in proper working order.

Message: I had the same idling problem with my 99 3.9L. My battery recently croaked and I got a new one and the idling problem is no more. I am not an expert on automotive repair but I had a problem, changed one thing and the problem is gone. May just be a coincidence.
