Subject: Catalytic Coverter Clogged
IP: Logged

Message:
My catalytic converter keeps clogging and creating a hole in the pipes. Does anyone know why this is occurring?

My check engine light is also on and the error code description is large leak in the evaporative control system. Could this be causing the clog?

Thanks in Advance,

Hector

That code is referring to gas tank cap
and/or hoses to the 'canister' in the engine compartment.
Have you replaced the cat ?
maybe the pipes are just too old ?

I have replaced the Cat twice. The gas cap has been replaced also. I make sure to click it more than three times when I screw it back after pumping gas. The fuel filter has been replaced also.

The gas cap will not effect the converter

Are you using any type of additives if so stop
there are a lot out there that will not only
destroy the converter but also coat the o2 sensor
and trow the air/fuel ratio off and also destroy
a converter

A cloged converter will not melt holes in pipes
it can back up and melt the egr 92 to 95 only

There is something wrong here to go threw cats
like that should easily run 100 150,000 miles

Cat failure is often a sign of running very rich. Pull the spark plugs and see if they are black/fouled.

I recently changed the spark plugs about a month ago or so. One or two may have been black. I have heard of your car running to rich. Does anyone know why something like this occurs? What are some things I should do maintenace wise or replacement wise to get this corrected?

Thanks,
Hector

O2 sensor would be the most common cause of running rich. also, a vacuumm leak and a few others.

I have changed my O2 sensor before. As I mentioned before, my check engine light is on and the error I get is the following: large leak in the evaporative control system.
What would be the cheapest way out?

Hector

first off if you're not familiar with your truck, might i suggest you get some kind of repair manual. Either a Chilton's or Haynes repair manual. They do come in handy.

what you're going to be looking for is a cracked piece of hose probably coming off of the charcoal canister under the drivers side cab of the truck. or it could be cracked somewhere under the hood on the drivers side inner fender to firewall. the canister is part of the Evap Control system.

with age these hoses tend to get brittle and crack. luckily my truck is an '00 w/ 77k on it and have not had any of these problems yet. but it isn't serious.
