I'm leaking fluid from my 2000 Dakota's rack and pinion setup. The info I've found all says that I need to replace the entire unit, but that I can do it myself.

What suggestions do y'all have, and where can I find any steps or diagrams to make it less painful?

Thanks,
John

My rack & pinion was leaking so I recently changed it for a new one. now i belive there are seal kits you can get but thats really waay over my head i have no idea as to how you'd rebuild a rack & pinion... changing mine out was pretty easy pop off the outer tie rod ends taking note how many turns it takes to get them off, remove the power steering lines, remove the steering shaft from the rack (either a screw or a roll pin holds the mini-U joint onto the rack) then pop off the 2 big bolts that fasten it to the K-Member swap the parts that didnt come with your new one and throw it back in... now i have a '91 dakota so its probably a bit different but the concept is the same. now i have the manual and i didnt even use it for this its pretty simple.

Thanks, sounds easy enough.

I've gotten it most of the way undone, but how do I remove the tie rods? I can't get the vertical parts of them loose.

Ideas?

They are tapered and get psudo pressed into the spindle when you tighten the bolt, loosen the castle nut to the tope of the threads and hit the spinde with a hammer where the tie rod end goes into it should pop right out but be sure to loosen the jam nut before you pop it out of the spindle or the tie rod will just spin.. sorry if its confusing trying to finish this up real quick before break is over.
