My friend said the radiator and heater hoses get soft when they are going out. I had a heater hose blow yesterday. Is that a result of the hose being soft?

Mine are 114K old...I think. I've only had my truck since November. So I don't know if my Grandfather ever had them changed or not.

I work for a hydraulic and automotive hose manufacturer (Dayco), and yes hoses do age and get soft. The water/glycol mix in the hoses causes the inner tube of the hose to swell and soften. Heat contributes to this as well. Hoses are like tires, they're not permanent, and they do "wear out". The replacement of hoses is really more time (years) dependent than mileage dependent. If they have'nt softened they're probably still ok. But if they're soft then replace them. You don't want to get stuck somewhere when a hose blows. Cheap insurance.

I was always told it was cheaper to replace a hose than it was to break down on a busy highway and have to be towed somewhere. As a general rule, whenever I flush and fill the radiator, always change the hoses. They don't really cost that much when you think about it. Like Andy said, cheap insurance.

I had a feeling that would come up when I said I work for Dayco. I used to be able to get belts, but the automotive belts part of Dayco was recently purchased by Carlisle, now known as Carlisle-Dayco. I work for Dayco's hydraulic hose, which recently was purchased by Parker-Hannifin, so we are now known as Parker-Dayco.
Sorry, no belts, but I certainly can talk hoses.

I had a friend (roommate now, actually) who purchased an '86 Chevy Sierra Half ton a few years back. Nice truck, 305 V8, 4-barrel carb, new exhaust/brakes/rebuilt overdrive tranny/paint. Pretty clean inside too, working A/C and dual fuel tanks. Got it for about $1500, and it had 120,000 miles on it.
Problem was, it had old hoses and belts. So we gave it a tune up, new cap/rotor, wires, plugs, replaced leaking valve cover gaskets, new belts, new battery, new fuel filter. He was lazy though, and didn't purchase radiator hoses...
Well, they -were- kinda soft. So I told him to get them ASAP. He never did. 3 months later we popped the hood to fix an unrelated problem, and I noticed that the coolant return (top hose) was about as big around as a small mellon! He -still- didn't replace it, and it finally blew apart going down the highway. Made a mess too.
And... er... well shoot, did I have a point to this? 0_o
