Message: My son owns a 97 dakota with the v6. Engine took a dump, shelled a rod and toasted the block, even came out the oil pan, Dont know why but I have been hearing a knocking in it, the truck was purchased used a year ago for his graduation.
Anyway we just got through doing a long block install, got the engine from a place here in town, 885 bucks plus 150 for a block core because mine was toast, 3 year unlimited milage warranty. That included the new lifters and pushrods, oil pump and gaskets. went ahead and put a new torque converter while I was there. the truck fired up and runs smooth, he's back on the road. He was impressed with dads ability's. I am a carpenter by trade but do 90% of all our mech, work.
Anyway just thought i'd share that.

Message: That happens when you buy used you just don't
know how well the truck was maintained
There are so many that just neglegt oil changes
greasing or doing any type of maint.
And it shows they usuly look a little rough
I got a nice compliment the other day from the
guy who does all the frame straighting around
here has a shop just next to town
When something that old looks that good you
know someone has taken care of it
1995 bought new dec 94 it will be 13 this year
still looks and runs better than new 121,575
uses no oil and just hit 24.76 mpg city high
way combined.
As I have said before I plan on keeping this truck
forever I love my little Dak 4x4
I have other cars and trucks but I like driving
my dakota so much I make excuses to do it LOL
Its also great you had the ability to change the
motor your self I bet your son was very impressed
