Subject: In regards to the whole timing chain!

I have a '03 3.9L and it's been making this same kind of noise everyone seems to relate to the timing chain and tensioner, the ticking/rattle noise. My question to those who might know: is this a problem or a potential problem, besides the fact of being annoying? Does this need to be fixed right away or can on I go on dealing with the noise?

The tick/rattle because they do not have a tensioner. If you keep it like this it will get slack in the chain and end up losing the belt and possibly damaging the motor.

Also, are you sure that it is not the lifters? They tend to rattle. POS 3.9s. I loved mine, but man did they all have some problems.

It could be the timing chain. I had the same sound and thought it was the lifters. I just replaced the timing chain and the tensioner and the ticking is gone. I'm not saying that is your problem but it could be.

Shoe, '03's have the tensioner. and besides the 3.9's are not POS's as you stated. it may be your opinion(which your entitled to) but they are a proven engine.

OK, let me rephrase that. The engine themselves are not POS, but the sensors, waterpumps, timing sets, and plenum gaskets are POS. Do not get me wrong. I loved my 3.9, but man did I throw some money into it.

I replaced my timing chain about a month ago because was tired of the rattling noise but when I replaced it looked as if it had a tensioner but I could be wrong because this was the first time I had done this kind of work. But is the black plastic piece on the left hand side the tensioner?

I'm not sure of anything at this point. I'm judging off previous forums, as best described as the timing chain noise sounding like the same kind of noise my 3.9 is experiencing. I first thought it was the lifters as well, untill I read up on all these forums. What would be the easiest and cheapest way to begin in narrowing it down to lifters or timing chain? I suppose I could take it to the dealership for a diag check, but I'm kind of trying to research it and diagnose myself w/o a $60-$70 diag charge. Where do I begin, diagnosing the lifters or timing chain, cheapest/easiest????

And thanks guys for all of your input and any knowledge you have on this, greatly appreciated!

This is how I used to tell if the bottom end was knocking or something up top is rattling... a piece of water-hose. Just cut you a piece of it. Listen to it at various places... both heads, the bottom of the motor. The lifters will sound like a ticking/rattling noise, the chain will sound like a slapping noise. I know that it will be hard to get to the front of the timing cover to listen to the chain while it is running, but hell. Take the belt off, take the fan off. It will not hurt a cooled off motor to run for a little bit like that.

There is another way to check the timing chain, remove the dist. cap and line up the timing marks, then mark, or have someone watch while you turn the engine backwards by hand, when the rotor starts to move again stop and see how many degrees the engine turned before the rotor started to turn. if its more than 15 degrees, I would say its time to change the chain. That would be even if it wasn't making noise, but that's just my opinion. Good Luck,

I have a 97 with only 68k and I got the truck back in 05 with only 29k on it, its been making the noises above since i got it, you can hear it in front of the motor, so I replaced a pulley thinking that that was the problem but it wasn't, so basically will it hurt the motor eventually, because I've put nearly 40k miles on the truck and it runs the same but with the annoying noise

In regarding to older style motors if you break the timing chain/belt you will usually bend some valves. I have heard on these motors that will not happen.

best of my knowledge, these are not interference motors...you usually find that with OHC ( overhead cam ) motors.
