I have a question for you guys out there. What are you getting for average life from a auto transmission in a 98 CC V6? I had mine in for routine service today (110,800)and the shop manager called me back to the service bay to show me what they found in the pan. It had a small puddle of brass colored material (1.5" long x 1'' wide) in the middle of the pan. At the back of the pan was another puddle of more silver colored metal. The fluid itself looked relatively clear. 15,600 miles since the last service. They're saying it's time for an overhaul, but I could possibly get another 10,000 miles or so before it becomes really significant. Here's the rub...they want $2800 to include the soft parts, fluid, electronic parts, torque converter and 2yr/24,000 mile warranty. Seems a bit high to me. I called other shops and get an amazing range of prices from 1250 to 2800. What do you guys see out there around the country? Larry, any suggestions? BTW, you guys have been a marvelous source of information for these Dakotas.

yeah, If it was mine I wouldn't rebuild it until there is symptoms at least or the transmission goes out. Your going to have to have it rebuilt at that time anyway. Might as well wait. 2800 seems pretty high. You might as well buy a new tranny for that.

years back I had a transmission act up 2 months after I bought the nice late model used car I didn,t take it back to the dealer instead I took it to one of these top notch franchise transmission shops he told me It needed a complete rebuild. I said to myself no we dont i'm going back to the dealer were I just bought the car. They checked it and found somebody at the dealership had overfilled it. They brought the fluid level back down to were it should be. I drove the car 80,000 miles and never had a bit of transmission trouble. That cured me from going to Franchise transmision shops

I would also run it

Go to mrmoly.com and get 2 tubes of the auto trans
moly additive and put them in

If its still working ok this will make it last
longer may even outlast the truck

I have seen transmissions with big chunks of
alm steel and a little of everything but they
still worked fine and never did break down

I would not sugest a lot of hot rodding or heavy
trailer towing

My 95 Ram was purchsed with 26k on the clock, on my first tranny fluid change it looked like mud in the bottom of the pan and the fluid was orange, well I drove it like that for another 40K befor it took a dump.
I would run it till it pukes. Around here the best tranny shop in town, one who is reccomended by everyone, a straight up guy, charges between 1200 and 1600 for that truck.
