Subject: Overheating with new thermostat
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently changed my thermostat from a 195 to a 160. The engine is running hotter know than it did before. It usually ran around 200. now it runs around 240 after 15-20 minutes. Yesterday i had to pull off when it jumped to 260 in traffic. Any suggestions?

i don't want to come off as a smart @ but

#1) did you get all the air out of the system?

#2) did you install the thermostat with the pellet/spring going into the manifold?

There may be air in the system. I just changed the timing chain and water pump last weekend. I believe the thermostat was installed with the pellet/spring giong into the manifold.

Why so cold of a thermostat? Unless your engine's pretty built up to require it, I've heard 160's will throw codes a lot for engine running too cool for too long (although that wouldn't be the cause of your problems regardless). It's possible that you got a junk thermostat. It happens sometimes.

I ran a 160 degree in my 3.9 for awhile. It never through any codes. I liked the cooler running, it is easier on things.

Did it never throw codes or never trip the check engine light? I heard it wouldn't trip the light, but would store a code. I could be wrong though...never tried it.

I do, however, know that the 180 absolutely KILLED my gas mileage...and really didn't make a noticeable difference in anything other than running cooler. I was lucky to average 16-17 mpg city with the 180 thermo. After putting my 195 back in, I'm averaging right around 20 city.

No, I checked it before I wrecked it and I was not storing any codes. I got 24 mpg out of mine.

Mine did have a 5-speed. How hard do you drive yours? Hell, I know that even if I drove mine pretty hard, I still got 18-20 mpg.
