Subject: 94 Dak speedometer not accurate IP: Logged
Message: Greetings fellow Dakota owners. Bought a 94 2wd V6 162k miles from my stepdad and noticed that the speedometer is not accurate. I've tested it from about 50mph to 70mph on cell phone with my fiance driving a known accurate speedometer Camry next to me on the freeway. The Dak reads about 10mph high at 50mph (truck says 60 when we're really going 50) and about 12 mph high at 70 (truck says 82 when we're really going 70). Weird thing is the odometer does seem to be consistent with the highway mile markings. Could this be the trans slipping or not locking up? Gas mileage is ok, 15 in city approaching 20 no highway. I've only ran all out from a stop once. Acceleration was disappointing and the trans stunk. Trans feels ok during everyday use, better than my 88 which was experiencing the converter leakdown problem.

Message: Josh, I don't know if the trans is slipping, but the speed drive is off the tail shaft I think so if the trans was slipping it wouldn't make any difference as far as the speedodometer is concerned. Someone may have changed the tires at some point and then had the computer reprogramed for different sized tires. I think it wouldn't be too expensive to have it changed back, or if it came from the factory that way a dealer should be able to fix it fast and easy.
Good Luck,

Message: I took it to a Dodge dealer and asked them to look into the speedo issue, change the oil, and just give the truck a general going over. Of course they didn't follow through with the speedo issue, but I was in a hurry and didn't press the issue. I thought the same thing, that maybe someone had bigger tires on it in the past. I'll take it up with the dealer again.

Message: Josh,
Let me get this straight, you bought a second Dak, with a 3.9?
Are the tires stock diameter? Tire sites like
www.discounttire.com will help you there.
Good luck,
But just think of the increase in MPG if you do 55 in a 65 zone :-)
